I created a windows 8.1 dvd using current windows os by running microsoft tool "mediacreationtool.exe"
The burned windows installation on the DVD using the "mediacreationtool.exe" does contain only "install.esd". Could NOT find "install.wim" . Hence the DISM command has esd file extension.
CBS.log file can be found in http:///www.powerclean.in/cbs.txt
DISM.log file can be found in http://www.powerclean.in/dism.txt

Please help. I have read through this forums and tried many things.. but none of them was able to fix this issue.

You had this question

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
Version: 6.3.9600.17031

That version of DISM does not support Source:ESD:

You have to use an Install.wim as the source...
Or you could extract the Install.esd to a folder using 7zip

I tried using 7zip to extract and it did not work. I have version 15.06 bet already installed.

Other options i tried before posting here is to convert the install.esd file to install.wim file using the following utility
https://www.myria.de/allgemein/901-windows-8-esd-datei-in-wim-datei-umwandeln
(open using chrome to do translation to english).

It did create a install.wim file and i tried DISM using WIM option and still it did not work. If you like I can try running using WIM file and post the dism.log file.

Where you able to look into the log file i posted on my website ? (Links on first post).

Thanks for your help.

Can i use the DVD created using the windows "mediacreationtool.exe" tool ? (I never got a CD/DVD when i bought this from DELL.)

I assume i have to re-install all the custom apps that i had installed on the windows 8.1 machine after i do a in place update / repair ? If the install will only update system files without any changes to the installed programs, that would be great. Any option like that would help ?

I do have a backup of my files what exactly this install you suggested would do.

Please confirm

Thanks for your help
