    System Restore issue

    Hi all,
Yesterday some downloaded windows updates caused problems on my laptop. I had run an SFC scan afterwards which said there were errors...before the windows updates an SFC scan was clean.
I ran DISM and it repaired the corruption and then SFC scan was back to no errors again.
To be on the safe side though I decided to return my laptop back to the previous system restore point instead. I create one or two restore points every of them is always after running SFC scannow to be sure any system errors are picked up early.

    1. This was a clean Windows 8.1 installation done about two weeks ago so I know there were at least 5 system restore points done during that time. When I went to system restore though there was only one restore point (the last one) and no options to select any older restore points!! Has anyone any idea of what caused this?

    2. I ran DISM then SFC scan again before doing the System Restore..could that have wiped out all the previous System Restore points?

    3. When you have SFC Scannow errors is it advisable to try System restore first or try to sort it out with DISM first which is what Ive always done in the past?

    Hi sportsfan,

Have you ran a program like Ccleaner? Such programs could remove restore points.

DISM and SFC only check the system files, they fix corrupted/missing files but don't remove restore points.

It depends on how much corruption there is, when the source of SFC is not corrupted it is fixable with SFC.
If the source is corrupted, it is usually fixable with DISM and SFC.
If DISM can't fix the corrupted source, even when it is offline then the corruption is likely too much and it is advised to do a clean install of Windows.

    Hi AxeO,
No I don't use any cleanup tools at all.
Are you saying that if after using SFC and DISM there were still corrupted system files that couldn't be repaired that using an earlier system restore point to go back to a time when an SFC scannow came up error free wouldn't work?
I ask this because you say a clean install of Windows is advisable at this point.

Just a fyi, my username is with the zero

The answer depends on if the restore point does or does not have corruption.
It is possible to use a system restore point IF the restore point does NOT have the corruption, else it wouldn't help to do a restore point for this.
Because it happens quite a lot that the restore point still has the corruption, it is when a clean install comes as last resort.
