Cannot refresh PC, files missing and media not valid

I've been trying to run 'Refresh your PC without affecting your files' because I got rid of some malware but annoyingly and strangely I was unable to get rid of it using a system restore point which simply wouldn't work, so I thought I'd refresh my PC to try and ensure everything is running fine. However whenever I do this it says: "Insert Media. Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files.' But if I insert my 64 bit Windows 8 Pro installation disc, it says: "The media inserted is not valid. Make sure that you've inserted your Windows installation or recovery media." Does anyone know why this might be or what I could do about it please??

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Toshiba Satellite P855-32G and I originally installed Windows 8 Pro myself using the exact same CD when the laptop was fresh from factory (it didn't come pre-installed as I got my laptop as a reject due to a dead pixel so it came with no OS).

Sounds like you are screwed unless you buy a legal copy of Windows.

It is a legal copy of Windows, comes with the original box etc.

Is the original disc damaged in any way? Are there cracks, scratches in it? What happens if you try to boot from that disc like you would if you are doing a clean install?

If you don't have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and you updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh or reset Windows, it will reinstall Windows 8.1, but only if you have Windows 8.1 USB/DVD installation media.

Have you gone back to factory reset and tried reinstalling the disc or seeing if from before you have files in backup that you can use, as I have a Toshiba and I still have back up files stored on factory settings

Can't go back to factory per above.

You could download the correct Windows 8.1 that matches what you have and use it from a flash drive or DVD to do a Repair Install, which is the same as a Refresh.
