Hello, everyone. Have you ran into this message:

"This app can't open
The screen resolution is too low for this app to run.
Change your screen resolution"

This tutorial will teach you how to run metro apps and use the snap feature on computers that run less than 1024 x 768 screen resolution. It is a fairly simple process of 2 small registry tweaks. Netbooks mainly run 1024 x 600. A little short to almost complete OS usability. Just follow the steps, which I have done myself, and it will be good in no time.

Beware, I'm not responsible for any problems or defects to your device that happen during this tutorial. Proceed with caution.

  1. Enabling the snap feature:

  • Press WIN+R. Type in regedit and click Enter. Registry Editor will open up.
  • Go to the following key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\"
  • Under the ImmersiveShell key, create a new key and name it "AppPositioner".
  • Under the newly created key, create a DWORD. Name it "AlwaysEnableLSSnapping" and set its value to 1.

If you only want the snap feature and have no interest in running Metro apps, you are free to stop here. Just reboot your device and you are free to start snapping. -Have not tested- :) Continue on if you are interested in enabling Metro app functionality.

2. Enabling Metro apps:

  • Press WIN+R. Type in regedit and click Enter. Registry Editor will open up.
  • Now press CTRL+F, and the find dialog box will appear.
  • Type in "Display1_DownScalingSupported" in the "find what" box and click Find Next.
  • Once the key is found, change the value of the "Display1_DownScalingSupported" key from 0 to 1.
  • Press F3, and if any more keys come out with the same "Display1_DownScalingSupported" key coming out, change all 0 values to 1.
  • Reboot your device.
  • After a successful reboot, change the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and apply changes.

With this done, you will be able to then run Metro apps on low screen resolutions. Have done it, tested it, and currently using this tweak to run my metro apps on my Gateway LT20.

Happy Windows 8! :)

The Enabling the snap feature reg edit didn't work for me. Rumor has it, it doesn't work in the Release Preview. :(

Yeah it didn't work for me, too, just now. But for a few others who replied in reputation, they put the snap worked for them. So I assume it's a hit or miss.

Maybe they were still running the DP or CP? It worked for those versions, just not the RP.
