I have Windows 7 and 8.1 dual booted on a native 8.1 laptop. Whenever I start my Windows 7 installation, it tries to run chkdsk on all of my partitions. I have attempted to disable fast startup in Windows 8.1, but it still runs chkdsk on Windows 7 boot. Any solutions?

I have attempted to disable fast startup in Windows 8.1

Does that mean it isn't disabled or it is disabled as that will cause dual boot chkdsk if enabled.

It's entirely disabled in the power settings in Windows 8.1. Dual boot chkdsk still occurs.

One thing you can try.

Boot Win 7. Open Disk Management and remove the drive letter for the Win 10 partition.
Boot Win 10. Open Disk Management and remove the drive letter for the Win 7 partition.

That way, neither OS should be able to affect the other.

Same problem with two separate ssd

I have win 7 on a ssd in a PC full of disks.

I disconnected the win 7 ssd, and replaced it with a new clean ssd on which I installed win 8.1. It worked fine.

When I disconnect the win 8 ssd and connect the win 7 ssd, I get the following post when win 7 is starting up: "One of your disks need to be checked for consistency". It performs the check on every disk and win 7 works again.

The win 8 ssd is really just a preparation for installing win 10 on it. What have I done wrong / what should I do different when I install win 10 (over win 8) and keep win 7 on the other ssd to avoid the CHKDSK issue?

In my setup the two system disks never get to see each other because they are not powered at the same time, but they share my 5 datadisks.

I was really sure I had disabled Fast Startup in win 8.1. However, since that was your first concern, I double checked and I am embarrassed to say it is still enabled! I must somehow have forgotten to save the change. Changing that AND saving made all the difference. Now I can swap os ssd with no problems. I of course really should have checked that before posting, but I was SO sure... Sorry to have bothered you with something I really could have found out myself.

From this I gather that when win 10 becomes available, I can just disconnect the WIN 7 ssd, connect the ssd with win 8.1 and install win 10 over that. If win 10 has a Fast Startup option I will remember to deselect it AND save ;) !

PS
Regarding the amount of storage, I am a serious amateur photographer and over the years the amount of storage required just keeps growing. It is easier and less time consuming to just add more storage than to delete images I am probably never going to use (or even look at again...). Some is duplicate as internal backup, and in addition I have offsite backup.

Again, many thanks for your time :):)

You're welcome, glad that fixed it.

The scary part of having that much storage is how much you lose when one of the drives goes bad

Good luck and take care.
