    Fast Startup Fails at Random

One of my Windows 8.1 PCs using a HDD system disc sometimes fails the fast startup giving the error Event 29 "Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC00000D4". When the system reboots, I also get the Critical Error Event 41"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

The PC has been correctly shut down using the hybrid shutdown command C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -S -hybrid -F -T 01. The system is powered off at the mains switch once all the PC LEDs are off and the HDD has spun down.

SFC /SCANNOW runs with no errors and all drivers are up to date. I've tried turning fast startup off and on again but this makes no difference.

Are there other fixes I can try? I would like to get fast startup working since the PC boots to the login screen in 20 secs under fast startup but it takes about 50 secs with fast startup disabled.

    Hello Steve,

The -F part of the command you use is to force all apps to close before shutting down. Since Fast Startup works with the command and not without, it seems that you may have a running app when you try causing this.

If you like, you could try troubleshooting with a clean boot to see if it may reveal a culprit.

Just to be clear the fast startup sometimes fail to work correctly even when I use the -F switch on the shutdown command. Is there a MS Troubleshooter or something similar for the fast startup problem?

As a test, see if Fast Startup still fails when doing it normally (no command) while doing a clean boot. This will at least help rule out some items as a possible cause.

I still have problems with a clean boot. Also, sometimes the windows login screen appears at a lower resolution than 1920 x 1080 but is cured by a restart.

I noted various duplicate entries using bcdedit (see attachment) and wonder whether some of these may be the cause of the problem and need removing?

    Steve,

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing the full layout in Disk Management. We'll use that to compare with your BCDEDIT to get a better idea.

I've enclosed files showing the disk configurations from Windows Disk Management, Paragon Backup & the DISKPART listing of Disk 0. I hope this helps.

I must admit that I'm at a loss as how your BCDEDIT got that way.

    Thanks!!

What can I do to optimise the PC without risking a non-booting PC?

Windows 8 was originally installed for UEFI boot using the instructions on this forum. Since then the only change ha been the automatic upgrade by MS to Windows 8.1 last autumn.

Personally, I would clean install 8.1 to start fresh.
