I think I read somewhere that my graphics driver will automatically update through Windows Update if I upgrade to Windows 10. Is that a possible solution?

Hey, finally got around to installing Windows 10. Not sure if the freezing is going to continue, as I didn't see any update for the graphics drivers. I did find a notification in the taskbar saying "Restart to repair drive errors" and below that, "Click to restart your PC". Should I go through with this?

It looks like it wants to run CHKDSK( check disk) I would do it.

It seems the notification disappeared and when I checked my drive for errors in Properties, it said it is working fine. I did, however, get a BSOD just now with error VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. A quick Google says that this is related to the video card and failure of the display driver. This could mean that the freezes are related to the graphics drivers after all.

The BSOD error can also be caused by cooling or dust problems. I think dust might be something to check out if I am successful in updating the drivers and the problem persists. Anyways, I'm still unable to update the graphics drivers myself. The specific one I found on HP doesn't even work, and the generic ones detect that my graphics drivers are customized for my computer or something.

EDIT: Something in the physical computer seems to be working hard during freezes (I assume it's the disk/some drive). Would graphics driver problems cause this, or could it just be cooling/dust?
I'm not sure how good this computer's cooling is, and don't know how to check inside to see dust or anything.

Maybe you should start monitoring computer vitals like temperature, voltages and fan speeds. That can tell you a lot about what is happening in the system because any large deviation from defaults can produce problems.
Something like this: Download can let you load whole system to the max and that would expose any weak links.

    Alright, I'll try that out.

EDIT: There are two installation components in the setup: OCCT and DirectX. Neither of them have a description. What does the DirectX one do? Should I have it ticked?

Also, I just got a very short freeze, followed by a notification that my graphics driver stopped responding but recovered.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I recall going to the BIOS settings for a reason that I don't remember. I tried not to make any changes that I didn't feel comfortable with but maybe I changed something accidentally? Would that affect drivers or anything? At this point I have no idea; this thread has been up for so long and I still have little clue which direction to head.

In BIOS, it could have something to do with PCIe frequency, to be sure try setting it manually on 100MHz.
