Sure we all have this, different numbers on each PC. Having an issue ? Do have a lot of processes running 146.
A process is basically just programs that are running. A thread is the entity within a process that can be scheduled for execution.

Handle (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia If understand this.

We could provide a better answer if you could clarify the question. I am quite familiar with handles but I really don't know what the question is.

    Basically

why is it so high, when not many programs are running

the figure is even higher now. on top of that my homeserver is running more programs (and even encoding) however the figure is still much lower.

Homeserver now running less but even still very low

Can at least check your startup program through startup tab in the task manager first. Processes are running programs and Microsoft services.
Some can be dealt with in software itself. Microsoft services should be left alone, not disabled. Exactly as seen in the an example by running less as you showed. Not a great concern unless have very little RAM.

This is the startup tab in task manager ? If so you do have a lot of items starting up. Some of reasons for 140-146 processes.
About 5 rated High usage, 5 not measured meaning not yet known impact on system startup. Need try stop some of them, first look within programs itself. If having no issues it can be o.k. leave alone, never saw so many if this is correct.

Handle count being high(>10,000 per CPU core in the system would be "high") isn't necessarily indicative of a problem, but... it is usually.
