    Bad USB 3 performance

Ok guys, I have a USB 3 hub (Sabrent, 4 port, not powered), and a USB 3 flash drive. When I plug in the flash drive straight into the PC (Asrock z77 Pro 4 mobo), it works great. 50mb write and 160-170 read. When I plug it into the hub (Hub plugged into the same spot the drive was), things look great, but then all of a sudden the speeds will drop down to zero for a few seconds, sometime much longer. This happens much more often with writing to the flash drive than reading, but it happens regardless. Same thing happens on a totally different pc (Lenovo y410p laptop - also running win8.1). But if I plug it into a Windows 7 PC with USB 3, no issues. Great speeds consistently all day long.
Caching is disabled, just so you know. I've also tried replacing the hub, the new (same model) hub, has the same issue - leading me to believe that this is a Windows 8/8.1 USB 3 driver issue.

    Help, please. This is infuriating.

Na sounds like your just not getting enough power to the hub. Each of your USB 3.0 ports supply 500m/amps your 4 port hub is splitting that if you can get a power adapter it will most likely work. I personal use Anker 4 port hub with no issues.

But then, why would it only be affected on 8.1? Or appear to be, anyway. And does it split up that power even when only one thing is plugged in? Do we have any reason to believe that writing to flash memory takes more power than reading from it - that would be a +1 for your theory.

Now to go find a suitable power adapter for it - it has a port for one, but doesn't include one.

Not sure on your brand, Anker requires the 500ml pluse the AC Adapter to function. USB 3.0 requires more power than USB 2.0

No Idea on the 8.1 thing over 8 they use the same Windows generic drivers. Win 7 did not support USB 3.0 and required specific drivers.

    Sorry I'm not much help.
