I just upgraded a raid volume with 2 raptors from Win7 to Win 8. Slow as shite to boot or restart. Bootloader sux, I need to do some tweaking, prior to upgrade with 2 different Win 7 Raid drives it was super quick. Now with one of each, one Win 7 [2xssd] and Win8 [2xraptors] they both sux.....

Good one Wolfgang! I remember it now.
XP flies also: from 3 to 7 seconds! (depends on setup).
We should give that vbs script from SevenForums a go on a VirtualBox machine. But the video says enough I think.

My best in Win 7 was 45 seconds, Win 8 a miserable 80 seconds. That's 77% longer than Win 7, and I have a SSD. Is it because I have to go from Metro to Desktop? Very disappointed in that.

The difference between the first and the second makes sense. Between the second and the third it does not.

On the same machine? Man what a difference!

Yeah almost same problems here, my screenshot above (somewhere) is Win7 on IDE HDD: 45 seconds. (7200rpm)
Then tested on a new UEFI laptop that's Win8 on SATA HDD: 78 seconds. (5300rpm)

Not expected at all, so there are a lot of surprises out there. I'll tweak my machine to see if scores improve.
It has to be the rpm difference, that's the only logical explanation in this case. Too many different factors: Win8 vs Win7, IDE vs SATA and 7200rpm vs 5300rpm.

Also depends of the different startup items.
But yes I'm also a bit disappointed because Win8 takes longer to clean restart, so appears. Maybe that's why they promote hybrid boot so we don't have to restart anymore since restarts got worse. Hope I'm wrong but it will have to wait for a few weeks of usage (new Win8 laptop) and startup junk-removal. If Win8 takes longer to restart after all, it seems I'm toasted without SSD.

Restart time is not a very good representation of the Operating System capabilities. It includes the BIOS time which can vary widely. On this system here the BIOS time is longer than the boot time. On my Toshiba laptop the BIOS time is practically nil. The BIOS time depends on the microprogram in the board and on the amount of gear that is in the PC and hanging off it. Measuring the time from "Starting Windows" is more telling.

I get a 5sec bios time on both machines (even reported in task manager in Win8). With that it's still 78sec total restart time that I get. Other systems have up to 20sec bios time or more!
