100% Disk Use - Any Updates On Possible Solutions?

As the title says, is anyone making progress on this? A quick google search shows an enormous amount of people are struggling to figure it out. I mean, has MS even addressed this? I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Here's a list of things I've tried... All to no avail.

- disable various services (superfetch, prefetch, win search, BITS)
- change virtual memory management size from auto / pc managed to custom (to fit the 8gb of RAM I have)
- scan computer for malware with malware bytes (multiple times, 100% clean)
- check disk for errors (run a few times, zero issues)
- defrag (multiple times, no issues)
- remove junk / temp files / use something like CCcleaner
- remove third party AV software (avast)
- run memory diagnostic (clean as a whistle)
- check startup programs to see if anything is hogging resources at boot (nothing there significant)
- make sure system maintenance isn't running at the time (it isn't)

Here's the key issue though. This problem almost ALWAYS occurs after a period where the computer is idle. It's almost as if the computer being idle triggers this issue. So perhaps the issue relates to automatic maintenance? But.. I've made sure all my maintenance stuff is scheduled for times when I'm not using the computer.

I'm running out of ideas honestly. I've read through more threads / posts on the internet about this issue than I probably should have, because it's feeling like a huge waste of time. Every single thread contains the same information. I've tried EVERYTHING.

Will Windows 10 be like this? Can we at least hope for something better? Maybe a hard drive upgrade (to SSD) is the only real solution? That's depressing though because this laptop is slightly over a year old, and I don't want to sink 200 dollars into it and have way less storage space. Plus. aren't SSD's prone to failure? I've heard they wear out quickly and aren't as reliable as HDD's.

Laptop specs:
Win 8.1, 1TB 5400rpm hdd, ATI radeon graphics + Intel HD 4000, 8 GB RAM, Intel i7 cpu..

Perhaps, download and run Piriform's Speccy, and attach a zipfile only of the piece that short-lists what you have installed on the computer. I'm sure the regulars here will be able to offer program-removal suggestions.

But would removing programs really make any difference? I don't have much installed on this laptop. A few games, google chrome, various utility things like CCcleaner, Malwarebytes, VLC player, microsoft office, etc. Nothing to write home about really.

I'm in the process of updating my GPU driver so, when it's finished I'll post the list anyway. Cheers.

Have you checked Task Scheduler's Microsoft tasks? There are about 100 of them.
Look for the time, when it was last run and if it corresponds with the time of the issue.

Sparingly, yes :) Right now the problem seems to be at bay, but I'm not holding my breath. Next time the disk is acting up, I'll be sure to try out your suggestion. Thanks!

Currently got 3 laptops with 8.1, (i7, i3, celeron), all behave very peacefully. But the first period after first OS install, am always seeing much disk\processor activity even after disabling\uninstalling unwanted\unneeded services\programs\tasks.

Then after 'a while' it all calms down, windows having done what I believe is it's special maintenance\updates\driver install\cleanup etc etc specific to newly installed OS.

So maybe just give it a little more time, and continue (carefully) tweaking here and there. Set aside some ample hd space for restore points, and do regular hd imaging, in case of experiments going too far :O)
