Recently, my 8.1 has been at least twice as slow as a month previous, and I've downloaded almost nothing other than basic things such as Steam, AVG, etc..

Skype would crash and I would need to restart it, upon booting it back up, it would need another restart.

Chrome would lag and tabs would open with a huge delay, pages would go unresponsive like crazy, and all downloaded things on my PC such as Steam would crash and require a reboot.

Please, any suggestion would help.

I don't have a good enough income to afford a new PC without saving up for at least two years, so that means I can't buy a new PC for a while, or until a holiday such as Christmas. But it's very unlikely.

CCleaner might help by cleaning up caches and similar.
If you use AVG Free, disable linkscanner and email scanner.

I always run sfc /scannow in such situations just to be sure the core system is OK.

Then there is making sure your drive is up to par. A chkdsk /r from Administrator command prompt may help. It can take hour(s) to run though. I was having random problems months back, ran it and haven't had problems since.

What are the specs of this computer? Have you looked at what programs/processes are running in the background? You might have picked up malware from somewhere.

I would uninstall AVG and use something else. It was a great program in its day, but is now a huge resource hog. Don't know anything about Steam, but looking at their website, it seems a likely way to end up with toolbars and other junk you don't need.

My two neighbours had the same problem, partly due to older computers. However after running Ccleaner and removing unwanted programs and removing their 3rd party A/virus program( which can be quite hungry beasts) and replacing with the inbuilt Windows Defender they both had a marked improvement in speed. Keeping things as slim as you can and run Ccleaner and defragmentation to ensure the best possible performance.

I would try booting into safe mode and seeing if it's still very slow. IF it is, then I would suspect hard drive problems -- especially since attempting to download stuff causes the PC to crash.
