Can I pull data out of a win 8 full backup?

I did a full backup in a hopes that if I had I virus it would allow me to do a restore rather then starting from scratch.. I am sure I was on windows 8.1 but it was a little old (9/14).. When I created the backup it was well hidden and I needed to search the web to figure out where it was hidden. When I needed the restore, all I could find was info stating the full bkup/restore were removed in 8.1.. So I manually saved (what I thought to be all my data) and cleared using the option to save the data and wipe everything else out... I forgot to save my SQL databases which are well hidden in the SQL program folders.. Obviously windows does not think to save this data either..

It is saved in my full backup.. I wasn't sure, but I thought when I did the backup I read I could do a full restore, or restore data.. But, I don't know if I can do either when at some point they removed this feature without warning me.

    Is there a way?

Also any recommendations on what software out there that does do a reliable backup that I can then restore from?.. I am trying to backup to my own personal cloud.. It seems every time I try to do the full backup, I am very disappointed when I need it to restore from.. I looked and only saw software that save the data files, which itself is better then nothing.. I know windows offers their version, but it does not want to save anything not in the area windows is trying to micromanage us into saving to.. This would again exclude the SQL databases, but I personally save everything my own way to the c:\ drive so for me, their data backup refuses to save any of my data.

    Hello moosetracker,

If you mean from a system image, then the tutorial below can help show you how to manually extract files from it.

System Image - Extract Files Using Disk Management

Macrium Reflect is a good backup program.

Macrium is one of the best - is what I have read from many posters in different forums. I have been using Acronis True Image for some time now. Both can pull folders and/or files out of their images.

Thanks, for the recommendation of Macrium.. I will try tomorrow with getting the data from the system image.. I am at work now, and it would be too much drag on the internet (which is constantly being monitored as we have bottlenecks) to try to pull them over the internet here..

See if you may be able to directly right click on the .vhd or .vhdx file, and click/tap on Mount instead to be able to pick up at step 7 in Option One.

From your screenshot, it looks like you are not doing this on the correct .vhdx file. You will need to do it on the largest size on in the folder instead.

    Should be the a5dc35f6-5a5e.............vhdx file.

Thanks, I just glanced down and thought all the others were xml... I tried the a5d......vhdx you recommended, but got the same error, I then tried the b245....vhdx one (just in case) got the same error.. I double checked all others ARE xml..

Having corrupt imagebackups when I needed them was the problem the other 3 times I tried to do one, and then tried to use it.. This time it seemed that it just wasn't available anymore to use to restore from, but I guess it my be the same problem of the past.. When I need it, it is simply corrupted..

In that case, yeah they seem to be corrupted and not mountable.
