Hi all, I need to run the Disk Check Utility from a USB bootable flash drive in a friend's PC's 2nd internal HDD with an empty main SSD drive (no OS). What would be the simplest means of creating such USB bootable diagnostic flash drive? Thanks

You could use one of the "rescue CDs" on the web, or a program like Macrium Reflect Free version can create a boot USB even supporting UEFI and GPT. To do this it downloads WinPE. This is about a 400 some odd MB download.

The possible fly in the ointment is if your friend's machine has different hw than yours. If it has anything unusual it may not boot with a WinPE made from your machine. But it is a free solution that is easy to do providing you have the bandwidth for the download.

Thanks, AFAIK Macrium is a backup/restore software (like Acronis). Does it also provide the ability to run a disk check utility?

It provides(or allows you to download from MS is more accurate) WinPE 5.0. Once you have that there should be many rescue USB creator programs. Macrium makes a bootup USB so you can restore a saved image. I think the paid version has a menu option so you can run other programs once you boot the USB. But I haven't tried it. If you look in the installation subforum on this board there may be a custom WinPE all ready to go. I think it comes in at less than 2 GB. I forget if Kari made it or a different regular poster.

Thanks, I just realized that Windows 8.1 comes with a built in USB recovery drive creator tool . I tested it and it does come with a command prompt and was able to run chkdsk from there.

Thanks for the info. I knew there was a mechanism to create a Restore to Factory settings type utility. But I didn't know it had a command line with tools. I'll have to make a USB from my PC and check it out. I rely on imaging programs because I am always tweaking stuff and trying out small utilities. I think I used Restore to Factory once in all the Windows flavors I've had over the years. :)

CHKDSK was unable to run properly, it reported CRC error. I ended up removing the drive, placing it in an external eSATA docking station and running HDD Regenerator on it, so far 1010 bad sectors being "recovered" and counting. Hope I'll be able to recover the data.

Keep fingers crossed. :) I booted my USB to test it. It ran chkdsk ok. Only thing is the font in the command prompt is a bit weird. When it said "file system type is NTFS" it looked more like WTPS. I did a double take until I realized the font was funky. :)

OK, end of story, HDD Regenerator took 19 hours to find 2300 bad sectors and recovered all of them, later the cured HDD was picked up by WIndows, CHKDSK found no errors and I was able to recover all 340GB of data (simple COPY/PASTE to another drive). Needless to say, I sanitized the drive and trashed it.

Thanks MilesAhead, I was confident I would recover it somehow, I never had a HDD mechanical failure, always bad sectors recoverable with software. That's the con of SSD's, you either have a backup or you lose it.

Like CRT monitors, the technology of "spinners" is well understood. They both may be heavier and old tech. But they don't often do weird things for no reason. :)

That's what I keep telling the hot chicks. So far they ain't buyin' it though. ;)

I once heard from an expert that there are no old or new aircraft, there are only good and bad maintained ones. So fixing to this subforum's topic, the key is maintenance...and performance! Hope that helps
