Does anyone know where Win 8.1 keeps a catalog/registry/database of what's on the File History drives and the date/time stamp?

Hello edn3005,

File History saves your files in the Data folder in the selected local or network drive at the location below.

(selected drive)\File History\(user-name)\(computer-name)\Data\C\Users

However, if you go through the process to restore personal files from File History, you will see all the time stamps easier. You don't have to restore them. It just make it easier to see what you have.

The tutorial below can help give you more on this though. :)

File history missing after image restore

Brink, yes I now know that you can access the File History files through Windows Explorer, but I had a situation where there appeared to be missing dates in File History. I had an occasion for which I had to do an OS image restore, rather than reinstalling Win 8.1. In any case, the image was about 2 weeks old but I wasn't worried because I had File History for my data files. After the image restoration, the File History backups appeared to have disappeared for that 2 week period between the current date & the date of the image restored. I later realized that I could go in through the explorer to find these files but why would Windows make it appear that those 2 weeks of backup files no longer existed? That's why I think that there is a file somewhere on the OS drive that catalogs the file history files and when I restored a 2 week old image, the catalog appeared as it did 2 weeks prior and lost reference to those files.

Did that make sense?

Anyway, thanks.

That information should be kept in the Configuration and Data folders in the folder below.

%UserName%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory

Thanks

That sure looks like it should be the place. If I ever have to do another image restore, I'll try to remember to copy those files somewhere and paste them back there after the restore or just go in through explorer to get what I need.

Thanks for the insight, Brink
