Hi Everyone!
I know you'll figure this out by my questions, I'm not what you'd call technically inclined. Despite using a PC daily since 1999, I only know the basics, like email, browsing, streaming media, games, etc. I've always kept everything up-to-date, I run Malwarebytes, CCleaner & my AV program weekly, defrag occasionally & I never visit any questionable sites, nor do I open attachments in emails unless I know the sender. So I guess you can say I'm a cautious, semi-experienced home user with game-playing addiction who knows absolutely nothing about how a PC works. I AM, however, very bright & I can follow detailed instructions, so I know I can do whatever anyone who IS technically-inclined advises me to do, so if you give me instructions, I know I'll finish the task successfully. How's that for a disclaimer!
I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo G585 & I've been having noticeable problems related to viewing streaming media, (I view bald eagle nest cams & keep detailed records for research), & I was told that my router, (a 5 yr. old Belkin 802.11 G), was too old & slow to handle the speed necessary for what I'm doing, especially since I have a broadband connection. I followed their suggestion because it made sense, & I bought & installed a Linksys E2500 'N' Dual Band router & I expected the video streaming to at least triple, (because that's what everyone told me would happen). That was a month ago, & things have deteriorated to the point where if I have Firefox open with a nest cam site on, I can't play a game, get email, go to another website, or anything else for that matter.
I called Linksys support yesterday & the tech did that "remote exam" where they take control of a PC & check wherever their product's info & activity is & troubleshoot. Well, he made a minor adjustment by changing the Channel the router was using, then he went to 'Computer Management'>System Tools>Event Viewer>Custom Views>Administrative Events. First, a "Query Error" popped up, saying that one or more logs has a query, (whatever that means), & that the 'system cannot find the file specified'. Then he clicked OK, & the console window filled up with 'Warnings' & 'Errors' that began on 12/19/13, (only a few at first, but they increased in great numbers about 6 weeks ago). When it finished populating, the grand total of 'Administrative Events' was 5,170!!! Well, the 'Events' are still going on, because I just opened the computer management console & the total has risen to 5,199! The only advice the Linksys tech kept repeating was that I "need to optimize my PC", then he quickly told me all about their 3rd Party Partner, Computrix, & that "they'll, (Computrix), have everything running smoothly & faster than ever in about 20 minutes for ONLY $79.99"! Well, I smelled something fishy, plus I just don't have that kind of money to throw around, so I thanked him for his help, (amid his repetition about Computrix), because I wanted to check on the reputation of Computrix, & see if this was something I could fix on my own...with help from PC-smart people, that is! I didn't like most of what I found about this company, plus I already knew from past experience, that most PC problems can be fixed by 'normal' people, if they get the right instructions from people who know about the problem because I've done it many times before.
What's baffling to me is that I NEVER got any notification about these events, so this has been doing on for over 1 year, maybe longer, completely unchecked. Why wouldn't I have gotten some sort of notification, like a message box, a message in the Activity Center, an email...something should've told me there was a problem but they didn't, so I wasn't, so I'm in what looks like a big heap of trouble! I hope that someone can help me figure this out, (I'm praying that it won't involve re-installing the OS...been there, done that...twice...many years ago with XP, & I didn't enjoy it one bit! Here's a little info that I think might be helpful, but since I've never had this happen, you might need other info...just let me know, & if I know how to find it I'll post it.
In scrolling over the ever-growing list of errors, & while I didn't read many of them, (& I don't understand much of what the computer-ese means), I noticed that a lot of them were categorized as; "Kernel-Event Tracing", then many are "Application", (some that I read were related to Adobe Flash), "Windows Update", "Schannel", "DistributedCOM", "DNS Client Events", "ESENT" & others, Even I know that there has to be a reason that these 'Events' are happening, so I'm guessing some settings are wrong or maybe updates are needed, (like drivers or BIOS), but as far as Windows Updates, AV Program, Flash & anything I know to take care of, well, I have everything set on Automatic Update & the others I have set to notify me when updates are available. I still can't understand why I never knew about all this, especially since I'm the ONLY one who uses this PC, (my hubby only likes power tools!), & I'm the Administrator. If these are Administrative Events, why wasn't I alerted about this?
I know there IS a problem somewhere, but before I use money that I don't have to begin with, is this something I can fix myself, or is it something that only a real technician can fix? I AM a quick-learn, so if there's a way to fix it myself, please post the detailed instructions, & I'll post the results.
Please let me know what all this means, & if there's any more info needed, just tell me.
Thank you all so much for reading my post. I'm very grateful for your help, & as you can see, I need all the help I can get!
Many Thanks,
DogPal
