how should I use the split partition on my laptop

Hey,

I have just purchased new laptop and the hard drive has been partitioned so that Windows has it own C drive and there is a D drive for Data. Do I need to tinker with the registry so that I can change the default destination address for installing programs that used the D drive rather than the C drive ? is so, does it really make much of a difference?

Thanks

Scott

If you almost always prefer to NOT install on the System Disk, but instead on another partition, say, the D drive, then rather than changing the default location every time, you can edit the registry as follows:

Open Regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

Change the value of ProgramFilesDir

Hope it helps !

I'm actually going to chime into this thread. Hi, I'm new here, by the way! Anyway, I performed something like this and now I'm receiving some issues. I followed a YouTube tutorial on making a HDD my place for all of my data so I can transfer everything from my SSD. I copied the program files (including x86) over to it and I also moved the "My Documents" location. Now, on one of my games (Test Drive Unlimited 2) and doing a System Restore, those aren't working. System Restore also fails in safe mode! Where should I go to fix this? Is there a way to reverse the My Documents change?

Here is a screenshot of the error, by the way.
