My Windows 8 Operating system (tried 8.1 but I had to factory reset because it broke) seems to be taking up more memory than it needs and it gradually increases over time. Is there any way to fix this?

There's an old saying: Free RAM is wasted RAM. By default, Windows uses up a load of RAM, on top of that which it is using, as cache in anticipation of the next operation - it's called Superfech. If there is a sudden demand from elsewhere for that RAM it will instantly dump it for what is required. It helps Windows to run faster.

Can you post a picture of the Resource Monitor > Memory tab. You find it in Computer management > Performance as a link. The output would look something like this:

Looks like you have a Chrome invasion. Try not to use Chrome (set another default browser) after the next reboot and see what happens.

We don't know yet how much of the problem is due to Chrome. My suggestion was a test to find out. For that Chrome must not be used. Use Opera or Safari in the meantime if the others are no good - which I don't understand.

Opera is quite light.
