System restore taking many hours

Since installing the updates from the week of December 15th, I have had many, many problems with my system. My Outlook Calendar hangs and sometimes flickers at a very high rate of speed, as well as other drop down menus and even the Task Manager window, typing stops and starts whether it's in an email, Skype, etc., I will randomly hear a Windows loud "ding" sound at about 1.5 second intervals that won't stop until I sign out and back in, as well as other issues. I turned off my AV last night and began a system restore about 6 p.m. or so. It's now 11 a.m. the next morning, and it's still running. Lenovo wants to send me a new hard drive with installation CDs, but my system doesn't have a CD drive. I am working many, many hours every day, 7 days a week, and I don't know where I'm going to find the time to start all over even if I had a CD drive. I use the computer to work, and I have to work today and tomorrow.
I have run SFC scannow, chkdsk /R, Lenovo dignostics etc. etc. etc. I've tried pretty much everything I can think of.
Any suggestions on the never-ending system restore?
I have a Lenovo Y500 Windows 8.1

Some info would be good. How old is the laptop? How big is the hard drive? If you use it for work, contact your company. They may give you a work laptop. Dell laptops usually last longer than lenovo ones. Try using onedrive or an external hard drive or flash drive to backup your info. Try to refresh the pc. It may help since it makes everything the way it was (except for hardware usage. That cannot be reversed. Try scratching a car and attempt to reverse it. XD or the year.) if refreshing doesn't work, contact lenovo for a flash drive recovery disk. Those exist, but they may charge you. you can even just buy an external USB powered CD-ROM.

The laptop is about 16 months old, and I have a 1TB hard drive. It wasn't a cheap laptop, if I recall it was over $1100. I am a one person company, so I can't ask "my company" for a new laptop. :):)
I bought a Lenovo because of the reviews after having endless problems with a Dell constantly overheating requiring multiple motherboard and heatsink replacements, a power cord that falls out if you breathe on it, etc.
My question here was that System Restore has been running for about 18 hours now. Should I do a hard reset?

18 hours is way too long, it sounds like it's possibly stuck in some kind of loop(it happens in windows 7 sometimes too) Have you tried a hard reset? you'll probably get a blue screen but it should be able to boot after, when it boots go strait to advanced start up and restore from there.

I'm not sure what you mean by "........advanced start up and restore from there". Can you give more detail?

I don't use any typical Windows 8 features. I use Classic Shell for the start button and have everything set up as much like Windows 7 as possible.

An you wonder why you're having system stability problems(the ones with problems with patch Tuesday updates are the ones using 3rd party theming tools and Anti virus products) I don't mean to sound sarcastic(see my signature).

I myself don't understand the comment about "3rd party theming tools" when ClassicShell is really mostly a start menu replacement.
I have been using Start8 since nearly the first days of Win8, and since upgrading to Win8.1 -- and have encountered no problems from doing that.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that, like you, I have been experiencing major system problems since the recent round of "bad" Windows updates -- so much so that, last week, I decided to "throw in the towel" and start over -- with a clean install.

I used the MS feature (documented on this forum) to download and burn an ISO of Win8.1 64-bit. I grabbed another drive and installed that clean. I though it was not working because the installation started out with a several minute "pause" after selecting Install. But, eventually, it did start up again and I completed the installation. Then, I spend the better part of two days reinstalling and reconfiguring all my apps. But now, I have a "clean" Win8.1 64-bit system, that for the last two days, has been completely error-free!

BEFORE this, I tried a workaround of restoring from image backups made in early December, and when those didn't fix the problems, back in mid-November. Those worked better, but there were still intermittent stability problems.

However, during that process, I did several complete image restores, and at their worst, they only took ten minutes! So, a restore taking several hours indicates something more basic is at fault -- quite possibly a failing hard drive.

A good thing to do would be to find out the manufacturer of the hard drive, go to their site, and download and run any drive "health" app they make available. IF they don't have one, you might be able to use either SeaTools (from Seagate) or the WD drive checker (forget the name, sorry). If any of them report lots of problems, only replacing your drive is going to get the machine back in working order.

Once you get it fixed & running good, I suggest you quit using Restore Points & use---

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

I use the Standard version myself because it has a boot time recovery menu. :)

I quit using Restore Points because they failed to function properly. :(

Right now, I can't get into my system at all...

This has worked for me---

Use the Power button to shut the computer down & press it again to start it up again.
Do this 3 or 4 times & Advanced Boot Options should appear.
Wait a few seconds between shutting down & restarting so you will be able to see the boot menu when it appears.

I hope it works for you. :)

EDIT--- Macrium images your entire system, including the Windows Updates.

one more suggestion: Do a proper power reset:

(Step 1) Shutdown and power off the computer.
(Step 2) Once the computer is powered off, unplug the power cord. If it is a laptop also remove the battery. It is important that any way for the system to keep getting power is unplugged or unhooked.
(Step 3) With the power cord unplugged and the battery removed (if you have one), hit the power button a few times as if you are trying to turn on the computer. When you do this and the computer tries to turn on, all the electricity is drained out of the system.
(Step 4) Plug the power cord back in and reinsert the battery (if you have one) and turn the computer on.

Then press whatever F key or Esc that gets you to advanced boot options.
