    Resource Monitor Questions

Hello, I am not real familiar with what the resource monitor is showing. Are there any links or anything that explains, for example, the network tab portion when you are in the resource monitor. Here is a screen shot of my monitor, at the moment. Can anyone explain, what it is showing exactly, like, how do I know if something is off? What is it showing? the strength? I guess I just don't get what I should be looking for, if something was off because I do not know what it is showing me in the first place.

It's kind of self explanatory IMO.

It shows you which program is consuming bandwidth. If an unknown program shows up, you can check what ports (it *approximately* tells protocol description) and the server IP as well as the DNS it's communicating. Listening ports is ports your windows is communicating. Black is active while gray is inactive. On the right column, it shows if windows firewall allows that port to be open or not.

Thanks. I figured as much. I was more interested in seeing if I could see if something was wrong/slow with ethernet, or if an unknown device was using my bandwidth

I'm running this program for a try since I use a router now for the wife's laptop it picks her up when she's online hopefully it works good since my bandwidth is limited. Download Wireless Network Watcher - MajorGeeks

The far left column lists the programs accessing the internet. If you micro-manage the firewall, there shouldn't be programs running without your permission in that column. Right now, mine has the browser and svchost.exe(s). Auto-updaters may have an impact if they are following through.

Internet speed is a complex subject. Guarantees versus expectations versus unreasonableness, and the other party involved and its server's capacity and load, all play a part.

P5200's linked Nirsoft's utility tells me my router and my PC are the only devices making up the network.
