I have a question about doing a system recovery

If you do a system recovery does it format the parition and make a new one? or does it use the parition that's on your laptop to do the system recovery then after you've used it you won't have one?

Depends on which version of HP Recovery Manager you have installed. On a few newer models there are different options in Recovery_Ssytem Recovery,Minimized Image Recovery,Factory Reset. If your Recovery Manager doesn't have the extra options, then yes it will delete all added partitions.Best to use an external USB hdd for important files.

This is a description of the various functions available in the advanced Recovery Manager. It is available mainly on newer laptops, but I have seen some reports of it on desktops.

As far as a factory recovery reset.. It depends on the way recovery is launched.. If launched within the windows recovery options. Just the windows partition is re-written ( because the recovery partition holds the factory image and it is use during reset, so it will not partition because a partition is being used)

If you create a recovery drive (usb/dvd) then the needed image is written to the media and this is the recovery image used to re-write the windows partition or re-write the whole hard drive (that option is given to you).. This type of recovery media is known as Bare Metal Reset Recovery Media.. As it will allow you to prepare, partition and completely write the factory image to a blank or corrupted hard drive..

It is best and highly recommended that you -create a recovery drive

If you write to a smaller HD size you will have to edit the *resetconfig.xml file (you need to adjust the <min size> of the hard drive..

meaning if you have a 500GB HD the xml file will have a min size of 500gb - if you want to write to a 32GB ssd you have to adjust the min size to 32GB
