System gets choppy and slow within 24 hours

Ever since I upgraded to 8.1 a couple months ago my system would become slow and choppy. Like even just moving windows around the screen you could feel the choppiness. I feel a laggy response when clicking things. It gets to the point where I have to restart my computer once a day to get rid of the choppiness. After a fresh restart, everything is nice and smooth but that doesn't last long.

This never happened before I updated to 8.1. I would be able to leave my system up for weeks without having to restart. Now within 24 hours my system feels like its bogged down and choppy like it's on Windows 95 or something. Anyone experience something similar?

I don't even have many things open. My CPU usage right now is at 30% and memory at 28%.

Specs:
i5-4670
GeForce GTX 770
16gb DDR3 SDRAM
windows installed on 128gb SSD

Update: I think I've found the issue. My system has been on for 2 days straight without getting showing any sluggish symptoms after disabling a program called DisplayFusion which I used to cycle wallpapers on my different screens. Hopefully this is it and I don't have to worry about it anymore! Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help!

Have you been in to the Start-up tab which is in Task Manager to check what sort of items are starting with Windows? It also shows an impact it has on boot speed. Just wondering if you have a lot of processes starting with the system. Obviously recommend doing a spyware scan too.

Let us know how you get on.

Just checked, and nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing has changed after I updated to 8.1. Windows 8 was so smooth.

I boot up in 10-15 seconds on the SSD. I did a malware/spyware scan and the system is clean

Is it choppy just graphically or does the whole system seem a lot slower? I.e - do apps take longer to load too? As you're on an SSD I'd expect everything to be near instant, so maybe Windows 8.1 shipped with an updated graphics driver for your graphics card which is causing problems?

It feels like a bit of both. I updated my graphics card drivers from nvidia's site recently to see if that was the problem but the system still gets choppy within the day.

Dragging windows around the screen gets noticeably laggy and choppy as the day goes by. Opening a simple video file seems to take longer than it should (even if its by like a few seconds). It's just that laggy feeling you know? I don't really know how to describe it.

I know the choppyness/lagging you mean. It doesn't feel as responsive as it should. I've had similar "feelings" when my hard drive is on its way out and it causes the system to lag and stutter. As you have an SSD, this is clearly not the problem here. Also strange that it happens as the day goes on. That kind of suggests to me that a process or service is kicking in and taking a lot of CPU time, if I was having this issue, I'd have a look in the Event Viewer under the System and Application log categories as soon as I first notice the lagging to see if anything gets started.

Or another possible cause that fits the criteria: overheating. What are your temps like? Use a tool like HWMonitor to find out.

How's disk usage? 30% CPU is a lot of activity already (1 full core loaded or load is spread on multiple cores) so Windows might take a higher priority on those tasks resulting to lag even if there are more cores available for use

Try:

run-msconfig-services-hide all microsoft services-see what is running with the system

disk usage is low around 0%

Ok, I'll try it out. I don't need any of these running?

The drivers should all load. If they don't just check if need be. I would try with all disabled and trial and error from there.

To me Google/Adobe/steam/skype stuff can be manually updated so it's okay to manual start those services. keep the apple services running or you'll have synchronization problems. Also keep the NVIDIA and Atheros NIC services running to ensure proper functionality of the graphics and Ethernet.

The whole goal of this is not to try and cause problems, it is to find a possible program that is slowing down the machine. IMHO with all disabled, he stands a better chance. Then, he can go back and enable services one by one and make sure he is golden.

This is a basic test of trial and error, not a permanent solution.

Okay so after a few days with all those things disabled, my system still slowed to a crawl every day, needing a reboot. This morning the system seemed so slow that even my wallpapers went blank and things were loading very chunkily. Then I guess windows crashed itself and did the whole refreshing thing on its own and everything is smooth right now after that crash...(without a reboot)

Also I'm getting these errors when I looked in the event viewer:

What is going on? :(

Hmmm.

I wonder if perhaps something is wrong with your Windows profile? Perhaps the systems is stressing trying to stay in contact with the app services correctly.

Try creating a new account and use the new account for a day. See if the system bogs down. Try linking that account to another MS account so the online apps work, if that works, switch that account to yourself and delete your current user account.

Make sure and make the new account an administrator account.

you better start backing up any files/pictures/data you wanted and transfer to a usb or external hard drive..

that looks like a reinstall situation man.. you can troubleshoot all you want for weeks.. or just reinstall in 30 minutes? and then if you system is slow and buggy you got real problems..

you probably have malware.. are you connected to the internet during these slow downs? disconnect the internet.. and see if it still slows down..

if you seriously want to start wasting time trying to figure that out - start with process explorer and autoruns and hitmanpro and lookup sysinternals (website with tools) and google "whats running system slow" which may get you more utilities to start troubleshooting..

all which isn't worth it at all..

i'd personally "clean" reinstall windows.. it's not a big deal.. downloading all your programs again isn't fun of course.. but what can you do..
