I had a couple chrome windows opened at the time with quite a few tabs and probably some addons as well

Lol, a few. At least that explains it.

Since Explorer is your UI crashing, I think it is safe to say something with graphics is causing the problem.

Is your graphic drivers up to date?
I would get rid of the Aero Glass you speak of.
Any strange things to do with graphics other then that?

Somehow, you are putting a load on the graphics that explorer cannot handle, this can also be a crash caused by anything really. You could load a bad app with bad coding and crash explorer.

You need to troubleshoot the GUI. However you choose to do that is fine. Launch something and see if the problem repeats. Is there a pattern to the problem? Do you notice when you launch X game it happens?

No I haven't done a clean install yet. As I mentioned earlier, I'd like that to be a last resort and I want to try troubleshooting for a bit first.

I haven't gotten to removing Aero yet since I'm testing things one by one and it takes 24 hours to see how my system is. I'll be removing Aero today to test.

Hitmanpro showed my system to be clean

Update: I think I've found the issue. My system has been on for 2 days straight without getting showing any sluggish symptoms after disabling a program called DisplayFusion which I used to cycle wallpapers on my different screens. Hopefully this is it and I don't have to worry about it anymore! Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help!

Choppy WMP playback? in Software and Apps
Anyone else having issues with WMP in Windows 8? It's not happening with other players such as VLC, but playback is choppy and quality looks worse to me than VLC. Seems much heavier on disk access from the sound of the hard disk as well. Codec packs such as Shark007 and CCCP don't have any...
