Try creating a new account and use the new account for a day. See if the system bogs down. Try linking that account to another MS account so the online apps work, if that works, switch that account to yourself and delete your current user account.

Make sure and make the new account an administrator account.
Hmm, I'll try that out. But ever since that crash of windows explorer that seemed to make things all smooth again, I've been going into task manager whenever my system gets to the sluggish point and 'Restart'-ing Windows Explorer and everything runs smooth again without me having to reboot the computer.

I guess that's better than nothing for now since I don't have to resort to rebooting.

You upgraded to 8.1 and now your system completely slows to a crawl..

Time to to copy your important files and start to clean install windows 8.1 and not have to "upgrade" from just 8..

Unless your system all the sudden works now, be safe and try a reset/refresh windows.. But I'm not sure if that puts regular 8 back on the system..

did you google hitmanpro and run it?

    Will check out hitmanpro now

Reformatting and re-installing windows will be my last resort

I would say that the CPU usage is high at 36% usage while idle. Can you sort by decreasing CPU usage in the task manager and see which program is using a lot of CPU? I would predict that's the cause for the system slowing down.

A normally idle system should have zero % CPU usage like on my tablet screenshot below:

This is with an Intel atom Z3770 CPU and 4 GB of RAM which is several times less powerful than your i5 quad core.

It was my browser, I had a twitch.tv stream open when I took the screenshot. CPU usage went down to 1% after I closed that tab. But I've had streams open normally before 8.1 without any problems so I'm not sure if that's it

Just out of curiosity I notice you have transparent "Aero" effects in Windows 8.1 from your screenshots - is there a utility you are using for this that could be causing issues? Just wondered as not aware of any way to get the transparency in Windows 8.1 (might be wrong, probably am!)

There should be no reason for your computer to slow down (assuming no rootkits, malware, etc.) unless your CPU is throttling but even then, it might be that dwm.exe/aero glass effects are causing vram memory leak which could explain the slowdown you experience.

Yea, get rid of Aero Glass, caused me problems when I tried it. Also what is with all the Chrome instances in the one pic you posted? That isn't right unless you have that many separate windows open.
