How To Back Up System Restore In Windows 8.1

Is it possible to back up the system restore file/folder to an
external hard drive ? If it's possible, where is the file/folder
    located ?

    Can't help with restore location.

But, you might look into something like Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

    to backup your OS.
    I use it.
    It works good.

I was hoping to stay away from a third-party solution.

Believe me, imaging is a much better solution and free Macrium is a rock solid program. I use it since years.

If you can accept the 3rd-party software, Macrium, Acronis, Todo Backup can help you to quickly backup system.

I would NOT go with Acronis True Image, I personally found the recovery environment to be very confusing. That's just my two cents*
