Startup from Shutdown much slower than it used to be

I'm having problems with my Dell XPS 8700 Quad Core with 12gb Ram starting up very slowly from a complete shutdown. It never used to have this problem, so I believe it's something I can fix.

I recently replaced the hard drive, so maybe it's an issue with that. I went from a Toshiba 1tb 7200rpm to a WD 1 tb 7200rpm, except it's one that apparently speeds up based on performance? If it's not that, maybe there is something else to check?

When I start up the computer it has a loading wheel spinning for about 1-2 minutes after punching in my password, then shows a blank desktop, no icons or anything for another 1-3 minutes... sometimes I'll have to shut it down and restart again.

I normally keep my comp on sleep mode to avoid the sluggishness, I know computers probably need some time to boot up. I was just wondering if there were any tips or suggestions to try and check to make sure everything is running smoothly.

    Thanks for helping a noob!

Have you checked bios/uefi to see if fastboot is turned on? And in power options if Hybrid sleep is turned on? To speed up WaitToKillServiceTimeout, see this article at Tech-Recipes if you feel comfortable digging around in the registry. Although shut down shouldn't be as important as booting. Windows needs time to tell all apps "I'm preparing to shut down, so hurry-up get out of my RAM and save data to disks!, then the apps must tell windows "ok we're all tucked in tight", and only then does windows shutdown without any data loss.

    Hello Cliff,

Looks like I have fastboot turned on, but I didn't have to check that in the Bios in Windows 8.1 it's located in the power options menu.

Basically, startup from shut down is terribly slow and I would like to get it back to where it was when starting up. The screen remains black for awhile, then desktop with no icons for another while, before finally booting up to usable status after 5-7 mintues

    Any other tips?

Do you use a 3rd party defragmenter or windows own? If you use windows run in elevated command prompt
    Code:
    defrag c: /b /u /v
this is the boot optimisation defrag command that uses prefetch information to sort boot files. Windows does this automatically usually every 4-5 boots(turned off on SSDs) but with this command you can force it. It can take a while. Then cold boot a couple of times see if that helps. Also how many programs are running at boot (see in task manager and in system tray)? Are you using mobile broadband?
