We are at a complete loss to know what to do about this problem. We are considering a fresh install of Windows, but don't want to do this without trying to solve things first, in case it is a hardware problem.

This is related to another thread here (see link below) but I've started a new thread because this particular laptop is having regular problems and they are somewhat different to those first described. I don't want to close the other thread as some of the issues there aren't resolved.

http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/57480-laptop-freezes-have-power-down.html

Apologies for the volume of writing below. I have lots of screen images but thought it would be easier to write the key things out rather than attach them all.
Okay, the problem laptop is freezing every day, sometimes more than once a day. The freezes are random, the latest one happened after pressing Windows key and R, typing Perfmon and pressing Okay. Others have happened during internet browsing and then it is no longer possible to load pages or close down the browser. Yet others have happened when trying to load a game (this is with Store apps like Microsoft Mahjong and a game called Big Business Deluxe) or while in the game.

The common features are:

  • the internet is usually connected and being used (the business game is not played online, but the internet will be connected on the laptop while the game is being played)
  • when the freeze occurs it is not possible to open Task Manager by any method
  • it is also not possible to open Event Viewer
  • the network icon in the taskbar will show internet access, but Skype indicates there is no connection
  • some programs will open and work (e.g. CCleaner) but others won't
  • some apps will work (e.g. snipping tool)

On this latest occasion, we also tried to open Perfmon from charms/search but this did not respond either.

The only way to get out of this is to shut down. This is initiated through charms/settings and the laptop goes through the motions of shutting down (spinning dots with shutting down message) but it just hangs there and the only way to shut down is with the power button.

On this latest occasion, when the laptop was rebooted (manually switching off and back on after a few seconds, NOT a restart) we successfully opened Perfmon through Win+R, then found we had 3 instances of Perfmon open (presumably the 2 from before the shutdown?).

And now to all those error messages:

The first thing we do on restarting is have a look in event log to see if anything useful has been logged at the time of the freeze. Yesterday (not the freeze mentioned above, a previous one), as far as we can tell, the thing that triggered the freeze was Mahjong. The game started to load but did not complete. We found the following Application Event:

Event 1002, Application Hang:
The program Mahjong.exe version 1.1.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
Process ID: 1bc4
Start Time: 01d00cd20bf37ec4
Termination Time: 60000
(there is also Application Path, Report Id, Faulting Package fullname & Faulting Package-relative application ID but lots to type)

There were other Application Events related to Search, ESENT and toTripoliIndexer

And we found the following 3 errors repeated 170 times in the System section of Event Viewer:

Event 7009, Service Control Manager
A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Search service to connect

Event 7000, Service Control Manager
The Windows Search service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

Event 10005, DistributedCOM
DCOM got error "1053" attempting to start the service WSearch with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server: {B52D54BB-4818-4EB9-AA80-F9EACD371DF8}.

Other errors logged at the time of this freeze were:

Event 4311, NetBT (twice)
Initialization failed because the driver device could not be created. Use the string "5E2A70538733" to identify the interface for which initialization failed. It represents the MAC address of the failed interface or the GUID if NetBT was unable to map from GUID to MAC address. If neither the MAC address nor the GUID were available, the string represents a cluster device name.

Event 7024, Service Control Manager
The Windows Search Service terminated with the following service-specific error: %%2147749126

Event 7031, Service Control Manager
The Windows Search service terminated unexpectedly. It has done thi1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 30000 milliseconds. Restart the service.

Event 6008, EventLog
The previous system shutdown at 8:54 PM on 11/30/2014 was unexpected (as far as we know there was NO shutdown - at least not one we noticed while using the laptop)

Other errors that occurred after a freeze earlier in the day are:

Event 10010, DistributedCOM (got this error 4 times in a row, just with a different number between {}
The server {BF6C1E47-86EC-4194-9CE5-13C15DCB2001} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout

We are also regularly seeing the following Warnings (not just after freezes):

Event 1, RTL8i68
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller is disconnected from network

Event 16001, AFD
A TDI filter (\Driver\EfwTdiFlt) was detected. This filter has not been certified by Microsoft and may cause system instability.

The System Diagnostic Report from Perfmon gives 1 Warning:
The average disk queue length is 1. The disk may be at its maximum transfer capacity due to throughput and disk seeks.

Things are often slow to open on the laptop, which would seem to agree with this warning?

All the basic system checks were passed.

As far as we know all the drivers are up to date (no contra-indications in Device Manager).

If there is anyone who hasn't fallen asleep after reading this, can you offer any suggestions please :).

man who knows what you've done but start with the website of Dell and look for downloads in there for bios updates, driver updates..

you do need to just fresh install windows.. sounds like a mess..

Product Support | Dell US

go through this slowly and select the correct options.. but i would just fresh clean wipe and install..

@bassfacer22 - we have already updated all things offered on the Dell website.

@David - we did run dism.bat a little while ago and it found nothing untoward. But that was before the freeze with the masses of errors so could be worth another go.

We uninstalled our antivirus today to see if that might be the culprit. We can't remember exactly when the freezes started but it's been a few weeks now and we upgraded our AV product at the end of October so that could fit the timeframe. Will give it a few days then post back with results.

Think we have now tracked this down to a problem with the anti-virus. We upgraded to Emsisoft Internet Security a few weeks ago, and when this was unistalled a few days ago, the freezing problems immediately stopped as have all the errors.

As we were happy with our AV for several years before this problem I'm trying to find out if there is a solution before looking elsewhere. But I will bear your suggestion in mind @bassfacer22. Thank you.
