Custom Refresh (recimg) fails to run-error pic attached

I was checking my uncle's laptop (He's clueless.) (2013 Toshiba Satellite Intel i3, 6gb, 750gb HD, Windows 8.1) on Thanksgiving.

I was doing basic maintenance. I ran Windows Defender, SFC, CHKDSK. I created restore points and updated some software. All OK.

I went to run the Custom Refresh image (recimg) command at the admin command prompt. I had done it with success three months ago when I last checked his system.

This time the recimg command failed to run and provided the error shown in the attached picture. Windows searched for a solution and did not find one. The title of the error box is "recimg.exe--Entry Point not Found." The error reads, "The procedure entry point ??0BufferedStream@UnBCL@@QEAAPEAVStream@1@K@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Windows\System32\migwiz\migcore.dll."

One important note, when I last checked it three months ago he was using Windows 8. At some point a few weeks ago (he guesses), the desktop background changed. He noticed that. He must have chosen to update to 8.1. He didn't even realize he did it.

In the picture, I tried the command twice. As "Creating Snapshot" appears, it then goes to the error. I closed it, restarted, and tried again. Same problem. Due to the holiday, I had little time to do much.

Am I missing something simple or is this a more complex problem?

Thanks.

Try running these commands from a Elevated Command Prompt:

Dism /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

It's going to take awhile so be patient and let them finish.

Thanks. I won't be able to do anything with it again for a bit. And there is no chance of him doing it unless I were able to nail down something I could lead him through simply. I will keep looking for a solution.
I've used these before:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Not familiar with this one:
Dism /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

I'll give it a try at my next chance.

Same for running in Safe mode.

Thanks.

If safe boot did not work before then when you have a chance, try to disable all the Non-Microsoft services & Startup Items and try again.

Good luck.
