Solved Disk Cleanup Stuck With Windows Update Cleanup With SSD

Well, as the title suggests, I'm having an issue with Disk Cleanup with a new SSD I recently purchased. In all my years with HDDs I never had this problem. I've been running Windows 8.1 with an HDD for over a year now with no such problem so this is quite new & odd to me. The Windows Update Cleanup feature in Disk Cleanup always worked for me with a HDD. If there was ever a time it didn't work, I certainly can't recall. I'm assuming it's something in the way SSDs are built vs. standard HDDs. Though again, this is my first SSD so, I rally don't have others to compare it to.

So, essentially when Disk Cleanup gets to the Windows Update Cleanup part, it hangs:

I tried:

sfc /scannow & I tried:

Dism
/Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

But, when I get to to Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth it hangs:

It's been a while since I had to do any major PC repairs & this is my first personal run in with this particular issue & maybe I'm just out of touch. Maybe missed a few steps? Can somebody help me out? This is the SSD that I have if that helps Kingston High Performance SATA Solid-State Drives (SSD) for Laptops, Desktops and Servers in 60GB, 120GB, 180GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities.

How long did you wait? Give it lots of time, like a couple hours if necessary, see if it eventually completes.

I just did Disk cleanup - System Cleanup in my new Dell venue 8 pro tab with 64gb ssd & it took 6hours for just the cleanup to finish.

The dism scanhealth finishes in few minutes, the rest two takes time in all of my systems.

I gave it 30+ minutes and it never moved past that. This is actually the second time this happened with this SSD but, I didn't feel like bothering with it the first time. So, this is the first time I tried the sfc & DISM methods. Again, both times it's been 30+ minutes in hang. Have you had similar issues with SSD vs HDD & it just took longer with SSD?

Try this one & then the dism restore health & then sfc---

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

edit--- Dism usually hangs on 20% for a long time.

Damn 6+ hours? That's what I'm looking at? :O

Most probably somewhere near it I suppose. This is the first time system update cleanup took that much time for me. But eventually i gained 7gb from that , in a 64gb SSD.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna try these now. Guess a little patience is gonna be a requirement :doh:as I assumed an SSD would natively require less time in disk maintenance. I'll post back results.

Alrighty then guys so I ran:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

All of those completed. There was a hang only this time it didn't take anywhere near as long. I think it simply froze the first time.

Then I ran :

sfc /scannow

That finished & now I'm gonna do a restart & try running Disk Cleanup. It's 3:45 A.M. here so I'll leave it running all night if I have to. I'll post back results.

Okay so everything finished & Disk Cleanup finished in a flash but, now there's 9 MB of data still lingering:

N2uBp.png

Rebooted & ran Disk Cleanup again & the 9 MB was still there. Is this normal? At this point I'm considering wiping update history just for good measure lol.

It only an eye blink for Disk Cleanup to finish but, there's a 9 MB still around very peculiar lol. In Windows 7, this never happened to me...

Oh so the real problem in your case was corrupted system files.

I think 9mb is okay. In mine 260mb update files were still there after system cleanup. I'm not sure may be David can help about explaining why.
I think system retains last 30days files and it is not deleted, something like that. But there are cmd commands for removing them too I suppose, look in tutorials be Brink here.

Yeah I'm willing to 30 days to test it out lol. I'll ask Brink & see if he can shed a little more light on the subject.

Try:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run:

sfc /scannow

In that order, that should do the trick.
