Automatic Repair Couldn't Repair Your PC

After suffering this problem, I have made some progress. By accessing Notepad via the Command Prompt in Recovery Options, I could access my hard-drive. Though now, about eighty percent of it has been wiped -- most files are gone, including all non-initial installation applications. Some personal files remained, that I managed to get off on a USB (all through the Open/Save function of Notepad).

Running CHKDSK, it froze once. Trying again, it repaired some bad areas.

When trying to Refresh my PC the message I get is:

There was a problem with refreshing your PC. No changes were made.

When trying to Restore my PC the message I get is:

This is very strange, as Reset had a different message not long ago -- regarding hard drive partitions.

What is more important to me is seeing if I can recover files and recover my Windows 8 product key. I have my installation disc, but I cannot find the code.

Any help would be most appreciated, comrades.

Thank you for the reply. I believed that I wouldn't be able to run an application, but your reply made me believe that I could. I managed to run ProduKey contrary to my beliefs, but it is coming up blank with no key results; nor a sign that it has even searched. Maybe it is because I am in recovery mode rather than the normal mode. I will try Belarc soon.

I am in my BIOS right now (rather UEFI), yet cannot find where to run the diagnostic. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

EDIT: Upon trying to run Belarc or Recuva; the message is:

The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present.

Any hardware changes lately? What is the make and model of your computer and did you create recovery disks when you got the computer?

There were no hardware changes. I was copying a game disc that I legally own as a back-up due to scratches, and it turned out to be copy protected. I was unable to stop the operation, and had to power off the computer. Then, it began. I didn't create any recovery disk for the computer.

It is B75M-D3H. My computer is not a laptop. CHKDSK is coming up positive without any bad sectors now so I am bemused to what the issue is.

There were it seems, and they were repaired, though system critical files were wiped. That is my hypothesis anyhow.

EDIT: Upon doing a CHKDSK on X: (Boot), it has found problems. I cannot use /f however, as it says it cannot lock the drive nor run disk checking because it is write protected.

Do not run CHKDSK on the DVD if that is what you have done.
You have yet to provide the make and model of your computer and not the motherboard.

I apologise but I do not know what you are referring to regarding what the make and model of the computer is. It is a custom built computer from some time ago. Are you referring to the case? Sorry, and thank you for the help. I ran CHKDSK from the computer and then the disc, to see if anything would change.

Sorry for being vague regarding specifications and hasty, but this computer has critical information of mine.

Down the hard disk or SMART test from the hard disk manufacturer. You cannot run CHKDSK on a CD/DVD that is write protected.

Thank you for the help, but I bought the computer many years ago. Whilst the disc and packaging are still around, the product key is gone. My first instinct when the troubles happened was that the operating system had gone haywire. I've already installed Ubuntu, so hm... And I was right, the operating system was the problem. I don't think I'll be able to recover files now, but thank you for your help.
