    Down the hard disk or SMART test from the hard disk manufacturer. You cannot run CHKDSK on a CD/DVD that is write protected.

    If you have not retrieved your product key, try to get it from the BIOS or look in your documentation when you bought the install disk.

    You may try to recover your personal files using Recuva Freeware, it will take a while to run:

    Reinstall windows 8 doing a clean install:

    Thank you for the help, but I bought the computer many years ago. Whilst the disc and packaging are still around, the product key is gone. My first instinct when the troubles happened was that the operating system had gone haywire. I've already installed Ubuntu, so hm... And I was right, the operating system was the problem. I don't think I'll be able to recover files now, but thank you for your help.
