Any ideas of what I can look into on my computer to see what's slowing it down so badly? I haven't installed any new programs in quite some time. I have 8.1. I've been trying to look at services and startup to see if there is something strange but can't find anything. One weird thing I noticed tonight is when I open chrome, in task manager, services it shows 10 instances of chrome when I only have the one window (no other tabs) open. What? I'm at a loss and this jerky internet is driving me mad, can't get a good score on bejewled blitz on facebook, lol!

I would recommend to get rid of Chrome, and switch to Firefox

Mozilla Firefox Web Browser — Download Firefox in your language — Mozilla - Offline Installation file . . . https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/?q=english

I did that, because Chrome would log me in every time, even if I didn't want to. Besides that making it slow, I felt like a tracked animal.

In my experience, slowness is due to the thing:
1.) downloading updates
2.) auto-aupdates
3.) anti-virus is running a QuickScan
4.) it's auto-defragging, but that stops, once is sees you are doing something

Thanks for your reply, I use firefox now and then, but prefer chrome. I just wonder why when I have 5 tabs open, task manager shows 10 or 11, doesn't make sense but starting to realize, nothing makes sense anymore! I've checked to see if something else is going on in the backround but nothing out of the ordinary. I've pretty much given up and trying to live with it.

Take a look in:

Programs / Administrative Tools / Task Scheduler / Task Scheduler Library . . . see if there's anything in there, that you don't know what it is.

Also, I run the free version of these, in this order, once per week.

ADWCleaner . . . https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

Avast - Quick Scan once per day, Full Scan once per week

Win Firewall - Reset to defaults

CCleaner - clean programs and registry

Spybot - just use the Immunization feature

Malwarebytes

Win Update

HP Update

I'm thinking . . . also . . . right-click on the Taskbar, and take a look in the Task Manager . . . under Processes, see what's taking up the most resources.

I've done that, that's where I saw there were 10-11 chrome windows open, sucking all the power, even when I only had 5 tabs open.

If I close out my chrome and reopen it, everything works fine so I'm almost positive it has something to do with chrome itself. My next step I think is to uninstall, reinstall chrome and see if that helps I think. I'll try the clean boot too when I have a bit of time. I've already disabled everything that I'm positive is a program I added, etc. I prefer to have as little as possible going on start up. I also have live tiles disabled.

As far as Chrome is concerned look at the Add Ons, sometimes they go overboard. Disable all of them and add them one at a time to find which one is causing the problem.

I'll try that, I only have 4 and they are only a search box, invisible hand (coupon site), new mail notification and email this page.
