a ? about let windows turn off usb hubs?

My computer keyboard manufacture recommends to turn the feature off in device manager let windows power off usb devices is this wise? i have never touched that setting nor have had a issue with it, they also recommend going into the bios and doing this stuff is it wise to mess with this stuff i don't now should i its a steelseries gaming keyboard and mouse. What should i do should i do it or leave it like it is i don't seem to have issues not sure why they say to do this.
    a) S3 stand by type is allowed if you have standby enabled
    b) USB speed is at Full Speed (12 MBPS)
    c) USB devices are allowed to wake the computer from standby
    d) Legacy USB support is enabled
    e) Toggle 'Wake on Lan' (if it's on, turn off - if it's off, turn on

Non of those actually turn off USB, they are settings to let USB wake the computer and set the USB speed. I wouldn't allow USB to be turned off/sleep especially on desktop PC. You can set that option in advanced power settings.

No problem, we all have lives outside this place believe it or not.

Turning what off? If you mean enabling "USB selective suspend setting", yes it might. Do you have timed backups set? All you can do is try it and see.

EDIT: I would think whatever program you are using to backup would wake the drive though.

yes it is currently of that selective suspend it says enable if i turn that to not enabled i wonder if it was mess up my backups?. also the lady just sent me the corrected instructions, this is wired but here they are and they do say to turn that off as well. also i'm on win 8.1 but she says it same.

We have a set of steps that we recommend for every user that uses SteelSeries USB products on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer.

    1) Navigate to control panel -> power options (make sure the Control Panel window is set to large icon view in the top right of the window) High Performance should always be used when testing USB devices, but there is an additional setting that needs to be configured

    2) Click on ‘change plan settings’ on the right side, next to High Performance

    3) Under the ‘Put the Computer to Sleep’ dropdown box, select Never

    4) Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’ – it will bring up the menu below. From there, expand the USB Settings section, expand the USB selective suspend setting, and select DISABLED. Hit apply and OK.

    5)
    a. Open op the device manager.
    b. Uncollapse “Universal Serial Bus controllers” (USB Controller)
    c. Select one of the USB Root Hubs, right-click on it and click on “Properties”.
    d. Go to the tab “Power Management“ Uncheck the option “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and follow on all usb root hubs"

Disabled is actually the safer option as it means your USB ports will not be suspended or go into sleep mode. The lady you are talking about sent you the correct settings if you want to be sure your drive is always on-line.

Yes, if the option is there to power off the hub, uncheck it.
