Hi there,
I've had my toshiba laptop for a year now. Bought it brand new.
Laptop is core i7 with windows 8 factory installed
Model no. is Satellite S855-S5165
Ram: 8gb +4gb custom added so 12gb
Processor: 2.20 ghz

Heres the problem
I do not know what caused it but when i opened my laptop a few weeks ago. There was nothing on besides the battery and wifi led lights but i could hear the fan struggling like it was trying to start but was unable to... Kind of like something you hear when warming up a car by stepping on the gas pedal repeatedly. I thought it was a hardware problem but when i left it open and got back it had started. The next day i left it open and the fan huffed and puffed for about 30 minutes before it booted. There is no consistency in the time. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes, sometimes 30. But it doesnt seem to do that when i restart, only when it has been shut down and started. There is no other problem in performance after it starts.
I tried refreshing the pc and restoring all the settings but the problem is persistant.
Can anybody help me.... I dont want to have to wait a while all the time.

Does it act the same booting into Safe Mode? Could check memory sticks also. Does it do the same thing regardless if plugged into mains power or on battery?

The cause may be some corruption of some bits of memory that affect how the power switch is read since the power switch on modern PCs doesn't actually switch power directly. The following procedure will remove the primary power sources of AC and main battery, and then drain residual capacitance by pressing the power switch several times. This will clear out stored values that may be corrupt, but will not affect data on the drive.

  1. Power off your laptop.
  2. Disconnect AC adapter (if it's connected).
  3. Take off the battery.
  4. Press and hold power button several time for several seconds each time.
  5. Release power button.
  6. Put in back the battery and reconnect AC.
  7. Power on.

You also mentioned that you refreshed the pc, how, from within Windows or did you do a Factory Reset.

I tries the above procedure to remove the residul power but nothing, the problem hasnt gone away. Though the time has improved a bit. I waited a bit less than 10mins. And i refrehed it from inside windows using the tool thats in the control panel. There is also the option of restoring to factory default but i dont want to do that unless i have to since i will lose all data.

Save you data to an external drive and restore your computer to factory conditions.

Took me long enough but i managed to back up my data and restored it to factory settings but the problem just refuses to go away. Its even getting worse, last time it took 4 hours to start, the fan struggles as usual but after t starts all is well...now im afraid of shutting down because how long will it take next time. Please if you have any suggestions... All signs point to a hardware problem but what could it possibly be?
