    High RAM Usage (Spotify high)

First off I have 8GB of RAM, and I get notifications all the time that my RAM is high, and it wants to close programs.
The main program that worries me the most is Spotify is using 900MB of RAM when playing and 500MB when not playing. Why is this so high? The games I play are not even that high.
Also is there anyway to reduce how much RAM Chrome uses? All of the chrome added up has to be at least 2 GB of RAM.
I never had problems with RAM on my Laptop that ran Win7 with 8gb of RAM, and I ran the same programs. I switched to win8 because it was supposedly better at using RAM....

Not sure if I have memory leaks elsewhere too but I constantly get notifications that RAM is high, and the lowest it ever sits is at 60%

    any help appreciated.

You can look at events, or run SysInternals Process Explorer, to find out what sub-process is eating up RAM.

Post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performacne - Memory tab. I wouldn't even care to comment without seeing that first.

Hi there bigceej, you could always keep an eye on whats hogging your RAM. Open task manager and under processes tab identify which processes are using RAM by percentage.I am using process explorer aswell,a very useful tool, helps to know, what process is popping out,how much memory it uses,CPU usage, lets you know how a process interacts with the web, sending or receiving data.Give it try,if any processes look "dodgy" and are hogging your system,do respond with findings.

    edit:was still typing,yep a snippet would tell a lot...

I have been following it and I always see a bunch of Chrome processes and Spotify being high, along with a bunch of other programs (probably from programs I have running at startup) but these have a very small usage. But it doesn't really look like it is adding up. I have up to 6.5 GB of RAM usage and task manager shows maybe 4GB of that.

I have found that I have to run some programs and even games in compatibility mode (7) or I get the high usage warning. No rhyme or reason just some act that way with 8.1.

    CleanMem Free

CleanMem at best make a cosmetic improvement in memory usage. All the program does is to send parts of applications to the standby list. Windows memory manager is fully capable of doing this on it's own and does so when needed. But Windows approach is far more fine grained and controlled than the brutal method employed by CleanMem.

CleanMem is relatively harmless but won't do any real good either. I would expect it to have a small negative impact on performance.

Low memory warnings by Windows rarely refer to RAM usage. More likely they are due to Virtual address space shortages or nering the commit limit. But as mentioned previously I really want to see a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance - Memory tab before commenting further.

Any example programs? Should I just try it on programs that tend to run high?

This will let you look at what processes for Chrome, are using up how much memory. chrome://memory-redirect/ I show Ad-Block plus and Spotify high, using a lot of RAM on my Xubuntu install. But nothing to eat up all available RAM.

I really do not know why Chromium would have Spotify built into the browser. Unless they are using it for something in particular. I do not even have anything that would need Spotify installed in my Chrome. Only thing I can think of, is it is coded in for the Chromecast extension.
