Dual Booting 7/8 on an eMachine T5234.

Won't timeout to sleep or hibernate, or hibernate even on command.

With old or new Nvidia driver delivered for Win8.

When I run last wake command after failure I get this:

I had similar problems under Windows 7, so I'm guessing the base issue is similar. I found my solution, by following the instructions found at Windows 7 Power Management: Fixing PC Insomnia The specific information that helped me, is the section under 'Allow Standby with Remote Opens' about halfway down the page.

Turns out it was Wireless card Power Saving option set "Always On" in the Advanced tab in Device Manager. I had been looking for Power Mgmt tabs so passed it over a few times.

Just curious. :)

Does it have something to do with the BIOS or its setting that is non compliance to windows commands?

Is your driver up to date? What is its hardware id? Older wireless drivers are notorious on 7/8, especially for 802.11 G. If you find it is an Atheros based chipset:

ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)

You can also tell if it is Atheros by checking the driver tab, then details. If the driver file name begins with "ath" it's Atheros.

It's an old card with a 2005 Ralink driver. So I guess I should feel lucky it had the setting to choose.

I hear that. Good job by finding the issue though.

Microsoft Update Catalog

Microsoft has 2006 drivers for it, but need to be .inf edited. If you have x86 Windows, it would be well worth it to do. I'll make it for ya if ya want. If x64, it's probably too much trouble to have to deal with driver signing enforcement.

Wow, thanks Gman. :geek:

This eMach does have 32 bit, with only 2gb and an Athlon 4000 Dualie.

Curious: what does the editing do?

Hi Kevin.

This is where i found it:

I can see that. :)

I was thinking mostly on drivers power management there is always an option to allow the computer to turn off the device to save power, overriding the driver setting itself. :(

Thanks for the reply. :)

As I said I was looking for the usual-suspect Power Mgmt tabs but that drive had none.

On the second or third pass I found it buried in Advanced tab.

Thanks, guys.

New driver date for you: 6/26/2006

Editing the .inf makes it so the driver will install on your hardware. The driver is made for it, but many times, companies don't want their name associated with the new driver because they are trying to make more money on selling new/different items. Read inside the .inf - it says it straight out and clear as day:

QCOM They did not wamt to use their own manufacture name
MSI White box, they did not intend to use their company name
Winstron, they did not intend to use their company name

etc... In your case, Linksys made it where you aren't even supposed to get this at all!

In this case, you, the end user, suffer because of it. I fixed it so it even retains the original name for you: "Linksys Wireless-G PCI"

Install using the Device Manager.

Hi again GMan -

Wouldn't pick it up using browse so I had to choose Use Disk and provide path to the unzipped folder.

At first it wouldn't sleep or Hibernate, after changing same Power Saving setting it would Sleep but not Hibernate. I chose the Maximum Power saving choice and it would do both. Then I went back to Fast Power Saving and it will now do both again. So it's a bit fussy in it's advanced age, I guess.

All is working fine now. Thanks!

Sounds good. You're welcome.

I always install everything in device manager like this:

Right click, update driver software, browse my computer, let me pick, have disk, browse.

Then double click on the actual inf. Click ok then next. It installs. But in most cases, pointing it to the folder only and making it look inside works well too, as it did for you.

Enjoy!

Lol. Perhaps I'd be "testy" if I'd been "navigating Windows" for 30+ years. Hell, I've only been navigating Windows for 21.5 years and I'm nowhere near as "testy" as that!
