Hi,

Problem:
My computer freezes randomly when I am using multiple programs. For example Photoshop and Chrome. Fortunately it doesn't happen all the time. But is it is still very annonying. I think the problem is driver related but I'm not sure. It has never happend when playing games.

Symptons:
Freeze/Lockup. Cannot control the mouse. The only thing I can do when it happens is to hold the power button.

Information:
- Computer: Alienware 17 Laptop
- OS: Windows 8.1

- Attachment: Event Viewer administrative logs- Do you need more information?

Thanks in advance!

PS: I hope this is the correct subforum for my thread.

The problem points to your mouse, do you have another that you can try?

Thanks for quick response.

I am using another mouse now. I failed to mention that I am using a wacom tablet sometimes as well. I had a wireless bluetooth mouse connected.

It might help to run-

sfc /scannow

&

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in administrator command prompts.

Also, be sure your RAM is seated correctly and dust the innards of your PC, especially the fan blades and CPU heatsink.

Thanks for all your comments! ;)

@David Bailey:
I have done SFC & Dism and SFC again.

@Azasadny:
I have checked it.

I am still using another mouse and I haven't had any freezes so far. However I do notice weird behaviour when I insert my wacom tablet: Event viewer logs a few warnings about the mouse and the fans make a little bit more more noise. Could it be driver related?

It may be worth running the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (Start > Run > MdSched.exe > OK).

If you're lucky, the freezes are driver related. If you're not, it could be overheating, or bad hardware. Not necessarily bad memory, as everyone always assumes for some reason. Could be the CPU, power supply, etc.
