Registry cleaner has caused Autorun problems in Windows 8

I ran 'Wise Registry Cleaner' on my Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1 Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 Laptop. After the software finished scanning and cleaned up 47 errors I re-booted I found I had problems.
When I inserted a USB key I got no notification popup asking me what I wanted to do and the contents of the key were not displayed. I tried several USB keys in 3 different USB ports but the problem was just the same. Apart from that they appear to be usable and work OK.
I then found that when I inserted a DVD there would be no notification popup and the DVD would not run and if I clicked on Autorun 'This PC' greyed out and the icon on the taskbar said it was not responding. The only way to get back to the desktop was to eject the DVD using the eject button on the drive. Strangely as soon as the DVD was ejected the Autorun popup would appear asking what I wanted to do with the DVD.
I have run a Microsoft Autorun fix but it has not fixed the problem. I have searched Google but not found anything that matches my problem.
I ran the same software on my Windows XP Pro SP3 Laptop and found I now have exactly the same problems as my Windows 8.1 Laptop.

I have reported this problem to 'Wisecleaner.com'

Has anyone else experienced this problem and did they find a fix.

    Thanks

    Jan

    Hello Jan,

If you have a restore point available, you could see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully undo and fix it.

System Restore - How to Do in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,

Hi Shawn, Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately I was doing a clean out of my Windows setup and had just deleted my restore points to start again. I then got distracted for a few hours and forgot about creating a new restore point when I got back to my PC....silly me.

Strange that you should respond to this as it was following a recommendation of Wise Registry Cleaner by you in another thread that prompted me to try it out.

If I remember correctly, I believe that WiseCleaner has an undo feature. If so and enabled, you could use it to undo the changes it made.

Hi Shawn, I do not remember seeing anything about an 'undo' option though I did see an option to set a restore point but foolishly ignored it.
If there was an 'undo' option it would be of no use to me now as I have uninstalled the software from my PC...

It auto backups, you can use restore and select the date, I have WiseCare365, but it should be similar.
Try to install it again, unless you deleted the folder from ProgramFiles, it might still have left backups there.

Hi TairikuOkami, Thank you for trying to help me out.

Since the problem started I had already uninstalled registry cleaner but I have now reinstalled it on my XP laptop and under the restore tab I found no registry cleaner backups but I did find several system restore points, one of which was dated the previous day. I restored my PC back to that date and the autorun function for the USB keys and CD’s was restored. It has not however restored the autrun function for DVD’s which just spin and spin until I click on them and then they cause ‘This PC/My Computer’ to stop responding and grey out. When I eject a DVD on the XP laptop I get an error message saying “E:\ is not a valid Win32 application”. E: being the drive letter of my DVD drive.

My Windows 8 laptop had no restore points showing from either registry cleaner or system backup and the autorun problem still persists for both USB keys and DVD’s.
I have found that if I leave a DVD running in the drive for around 5 minutes the autorun popup will suddenly appear and the DVD will then run as normal. This is the case with both my Windows 8 and XP laptops.

    Regards

You might want to try this link below to enable autorun from MS:
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...Fixit50475.msi

EDIT: FYI, This is one of the option I always turn off after every Windows Installation. Even though Autorun provides a convenient way to view/play/run the files from the removable devices but it can be bad to have it turned on. More info below:
Is autorun really that evil, and if so, how do I turn autorun off?

Hi topgundcp, Thank you for trying to help me...
I have already tried that MS fix but it tells me it does not apply to my operating system or application version.

Have you tried this link:AutoPlay - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

If it still does not work then open the registry (Win+R->regedit) and go to:

AutoPlay - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    and delete the key: NoDriveTypeAutoRun
Altenatetively you can double click on the attachment below to Enable Autorun:
