I own an HP Pavilion G6-2301AX laptop. Since last 2 weeks my laptop was showing a message during startup to replace the battery with a new one since its performance is reduced. So I replaced with a new one and the original battery. OEM. I got it last evening and inserted it then itself. It is working fine. No issues but the battery percentage which they show at the taskbar varies. Sometimes it shows 100%, sometimes d orginal % and sometimes very less percentage. It's always varying. Why is that? or is there something else to be done to the settings after inserting a new battery.

Hi Suraj! Try charging it to the max (like 6 hours or so), deplete it in one continuous flow of usage without recharging it til it goes down to 0% or 1% or whatever you can reach before it shuts off (you may need to change the minimum value in the Power Options) then charge it in one continuous process to the max and deplete the same way, charge it again to the max and your battery stats should be fine. If your laptop blows up or you lose all your favorite mp3s or whatever I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE :) If it works - DON'T buy me a beer as I am teetotal (not for religious reasons BTW). Now - do NOT normally discharge below 40% or 20% as the lowest possible threshold as it normally isnt good for your battery BUT you may want to reapeat the process described above every couple of weeks (but not oftener)

Frad's said it correctly, just do what he says..calibrate battery now & do it once in 1or 2 months..

Newer lithium batteries are so good that there is nothing like memory effect. It was there in older alkaline batteries. But as Frad said it's advisable to not keep it on battery <15-20%,
You may do a complete calibrating manually as Frad beautifully explained it once in 2 months.

Don't keep your laptop inside car locked when parked under sun or like that, it may degrade the life of battery, keep it cool.
That's all you're good to go.
