    Hmmm...
Think this is one of those where you need to be sat in front of it. If it's totally locked up then maybe a forced shutdown by holding the power button might work (I hate doing that though, although sometimes there is no choice).

At this point in time, I wouldn't go too much off the reported file errors as you might be chasing a non existant problem.

I've reverted back to Vista this afternoon (using a full Acronis image) or I would have been able to check the sfc thing myself. I couldn't get W8 and Vista to dual boot properly as that kept reporting all sorts of errors and saying it needed to check discs for consistency and so on.

Shawn, thanks for the assist. I have not made myself sufficiently clear. I messed up, pretty big. Not recalling the exact boxes I checked in the System Congifuration Menu on the boot tab, I am LOCKED into booting into safe mode, without any graphic user interface, only the Administrator's cmd.exe box. If I exit that, I get a black screen, nothing. CtrlAltDel brings up the options to lock, switch user, Sign out, change password and the Task Manager. Everything I've tried boots back into the administrator's cmd.exe box or if I log in as user, the user's cmd.exe. I can't get back to the System Configuration as I don't have graphics and don't know the command line instructions. Ratz!

Since I'm stuck in the cmd.exe, do you know what the directory path to that file might be? Kind Sir??

What happens if you force a shutdown ?

If it's still pancaked but will shutdown if forced then maybe try altering the bios to boot from DVD and try a repair from the ISO W8 disc.

Just a little off topic.... what's happened to the thread notifications tonight (this thread). They are miles wide. Thought it was something I had done but forwarded them to a Hotmail account and that says they are to wide to display.

    Hey Mooly,
I managed to get msconfig.exe running from the command line and it brought up the Systems Configuration Box and I was able to get back to normal booting, aha you say, success. Pipe dreams. Now it boot up out of safe mode, but the screens are blank with a grey empty taskbar..... So I am now as you suggested doing a Refresh My PC. If that doesn't work I am just going to reload it. This is a good but not fun way to learn a OS! Will be back, with results of Refresh!!
    Thank you!

Ah no luck! Tried the refresh but still didn't work. Finally reloaded it. I don't know what is doing it, but with very few programs reinstalled, I did the sfc again after a fresh load and it still gave me the corrupt files error. Then, I was unaware, but I found it doing a scheduled maintenance. Wonder what that entails. It is running. I don't really know if I want to reload it again as the base fresh install and test the sfc. One question on something I did different. In the boot tab > advanced, I found that it had installed with only one core enable and the other blocked. I corrected that............ We will see!
    Thanks for your assistance!

By default, the "Number of processors" box should be unchecked to allow Windows to use all cores of the CPU.

I'd say it's probably time to bite the bullet and reinstall.
