Adding RAM to Windows 8.1 PC 64 bit.

Hi, Hopefully someone can supply the required information to allow me to increase RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb..
My 64 bit PC has 4Gb of RAM made up from 2 of the 4 slots containing Samsung Size 2048 MBytes Max Bandwith PC3-10700 (667 MHz).
I would like to increase RAM to 8Gb and would like to know if I can use spare slots 3 & 4 and add 2 x 2Gb Modules - thus making a total of 4 x 2Gb = 8Gb total.
Or is it possible to use slot 3 only and add a 4Gb module?
Would adding memory require alteration of the BIOS?
    Thank you.

    No BIOS alteration.

I have used Welcome to Crucial USA
    for years.

I upgraded from 4 BGs to 8 GBs with their advice.
They did not steer me wrong.

The 2x2Gb would be the best way to go and shouldn't take any BIOS change. Be sure to get the EXACT same memory stick specs for best results.

It takes a lot of pressure to insert the RAM sticks.
Put your computer on a stable surface & apply pressure with your thumbs, EVENLY.
Hopefully both sides will click into place at the same time.

In addition to the above. You should always use the same brand, make & Model to insure compatibility. Mixing brands is not advisable even they are shown with same specs but the timing is crucial and can cause memory problems.

I don't remember if I ordered my extra ram stick from a link on Crucial or I went to Amazon.
Whichever, I got it in 3 days, regular USPS mail.

My collective thanks to you all for your advice. I will install the same make to ensure compatibility as you kindly suggested.

    Hi there

Sorry to be the 5th player in a "String quartet" here - but these days I really don't think that mixing RAM causes ANY problem --even if you put FASTER memory into a slower machine then all that happens is the memory operates at the lower speed. (Of course it must be the same type : for example DDR2 or DDR3).

I'd actually go for the 2 X 4GB RAM --so why not get 16GB into your machine if you have 4 slots -- if the BIOS handles 8GB it will certainly handle 16GB and the modules are cheap enough.

I know this goes against conventional wisdom but I've "canaballized" so many machines that I've even got one with 4X slots ALL with different RAM maufacturers in them and it STILL works.

    Cheers

Thanks Jimbo45, I've tried finding the identical modules without success so far and may well consider going down the road you've suggested. I ran a scan with Crucial and they stated Max Ram of 32Gb possible.
    Thanks,
    Yorky.
