Adding RAM to Windows 8.1 PC 64 bit.

The thing is that it MAY work, no guarantees even with DD3 memories with XMP and SMD profiles and it's almost certain some advanced features like Dual Channel and OC are not going to work. Also voltage problem can get in the way. Some RAM will not work on it's declared MHz if voltage is too lo. Luckily most DDR3 will run on a bit higher voltage without ill effects and that can even help in solving memory problems. It also depends on BIOS version and settings, not all of them behave same. Some RAMs can also be "allergic" to each other and even to MB so without memories being of same make and/or type, it's still an iffy proposition to be avoided if at all possible.

    Hi there

Just add one module at a time -- buy cheaply so in the usually very unlikely event that it doesn't work you actually haven't wasted any serious money. Years ago I would have not tried this (DDR2 was pickier than DDR3) but these days the basic RAM functions are the same and manufacturing tolerances better. I'd be really surprised if this didn't work.

Laptops can be another issue as there can be some interaction between BIOS / MOBO and the RAM with special code possibly inserted into the BIOS ROMS by the laptop manufacturer. I can't see any problem with a desktop though.

    Cheers

Thanks Count Mike & Jimbo45, I think I may well 'play safe'; if I can't obtain identical modules I may well replace with new matching modules from Crucial as advised by using their 'scan'. Being an octogenarian I've copied all the advice to my tech-wise much younger cousin and I expect we'll sort it all out on his next visit.
    My regards & thanks.

No, not really but it's just a guarantee that they should.

It's not actually true. Of course it's better to work with identical modules, but it's not mandatory. Most issues can be handled tweaking BIOS settings.

How will you get into the BIOS if you have one 1333Mhz Ram Stick and a 1866Mhz Ram stick

Plus if you have one 16Gb ram stick and one 1Gb ram stick Windows WILL get confused, from my own experience.

Yes, I was using it for rendering on my PowerPC (I sold) and the project a was working should use 16Gb of ram to render in under 3 Hours, so I added another 1Gb so windows could run its stuff.
