Windows 8.1 suddenly booting up incredibly slow

    Hey,
My laptop is never usually that slow but last night it was really slow and I restarted it but it took about 5-10 mins to get to the gateway loading logo an after awhile it said diagnosing but it didn't do anything, this morning I switched it on and it came on the login screen straight away but it took me like 5 mins to login cause it was being so slow but I finally log in and it takes like 10-20 seconds just to right click on something so I went on task manager to check if anything was full and disk was 99% full by things like system, AVG, service host, host process but I've never has a problem with avg.

    My specs are:
    Laptop: gateway NE56R17H
    CPU: intel 1005M
    Graphics: intel HD graphics
    Ram: 4GB DDR3 memory
    Storage: 500GB

    thanks in advance.

What was your CPU and RAM at? The "disk" in task manager does not show you how full it is but shows you how heavily used the HDD is. I would start with going through the "startup" tab and disabling all the bloatware.

This really sounds like an infection, I would do a scan with AVG and install and do a scan with Malwarebytes. If needed post the logs from both if possible so I can see what was found if anything.

Sorry I didn't check ram and CPU but I can't even log on anymore, it tells me it's booting up but then it starts diagnosing problems then takes me to where there's continue, advanced settings. So I tried to reset my laptop as I've got windows 8 on my USB but it took like 3-4 hours to do then I left it on all night and it was still on the loading screen.
    Thanks for the reply

I also did a avg check when I got on and it came up with 3 or 4 keygens, but avg deleted them

Sounds to me as if your HDD is failing -Typical symptoms: Slower boot, Windows problems, high disk use.
Take it to a local repair shop if possible.
If not, take the HDD out of the laptop and purchase a HDD dock so you can move all of your data off the drive to another PC before it fails entirely.

    Good luck, keep us posted.

Im not convinced as I have seen (just a few weeks ago) a computer do the same thing and it was highly infected. Before doing the above suggested I would boot into the system restore, depending on the manufacture depends on the button to hit, usually F8 but I have also seen F9 and F11. Try and do a restore first and if that somewhat fixes it then check your disk.

    Here are the tutorials

    Hi there

The really easy way to check first if the computer ITSELF is OK is simply to download a LIVE CD of any of the various LINUX distros out there -- I'd go for LINUX MINT (KDE) or OPENSUSE (KDE). Both are reasonably Windows like and will run off a USB stick without touching your internal HDD('s). If these boot OK then your computer is just fine - you can then shut these down without having to enter a single command !!! so even if you have never used Linux before it's worth a try.

You can also backup any data you want to any other external device. Modern Linux reads NTFS file systems(Windows) and writes to them as well and external devices are all plug and play - you can access them directly without any "Mount" commands.

Now I'd then use GPARTED (included in the live distros) to wipe the HDD and then do a total Windows re-install. Hopefully you've already backed up your recovery partition).

My experience of failing HDD's is that unless you have dropped them or spilt liquid over them they don't fail that often and when they do you usually get a little warning like funny clicking noises or things like that. An excessively slow boot probably means you've got some services starting that consume prodigious amount of Disk storage that you don't know about. On a 4GB machine even if you have NO paging file the system should still boot quite normally.

    Cheers

I have tried resting it and ever thing and it isn't working but I have rang up acer and they said if its a hard drive problem they will fix it if not then they can't anything, they said they think the booting system on windows may be corrupted? But surely that wouldn't stop it from resetting?

    Thanks for the replies
