Disk usage spikes when nothing is running

I have an issue that has been happening since last week i think. The problem is that even with the computer in idle the disk usage has these spikes. When i want to play a simple .mp4 file it freezes several times and the all computer freezes when the spikes reach 100 %. I don't know what is causing this issue.

Just Windows doing some housekeeping. You would have to use System Internals Process Explorer, to dig down into what process is doing that. If your computer is freezing when playing music. The question comes to mind of what the program is that you are using to listen to .mp4 files.

I use VLC but i've been using that for ages and it worked fine. This started like last week

Even eith everything closed it is writing some logs but thats not a reason to go to 100% !

Go to processes and see if you can find what program is running. Auto indexing can run things if you have just installed windows or if you have installed a lot of new data/programs.

You may have malware as well. You might open control panel/programs and look through the list and see if you have anything extra you don't know about.

As above, housekeeping can do this but normally doesn't interfere with your work. I had a Lenovo desktop that would be idle and all of a sudden take off and run the drive for a long time for no apparent reason, I could not find any processes that were doing it. I even went in and shut programs/processes down one at a time and never did find it. Microsoft gremlins I guess :-)

you're right. sometimes when i leave the computer turned on for about 20 minutes the disk goes to 90% and stays there and the cpu kicks in as well. i just move the mouse and everything calms down...

i dont have any viruses, i think.. and i'm watching the resources monitor closely to see whats happening but so far nothing special ..

Probably a problem with hardware interrupts, which is either related to a driver you're using, or an actual hardware failure. Use a program called Process Explorer to further inspect your processes.

Process Explorer will help determine what is doing what and when, in other words, who's hogging the resources. It may give you a better insight on what is going on beyond Task Manager.

Try this freeware one, I hear it is not too bad

Solved Performance Lag Spikes, CPU Usage Decreases in Performance & Maintenance
It's an odd problem and I'm not really sure what is going on. Basically, it seems that from time to time the CPU usage of a certain program decreases for no apparent reason, when it should be actually getting higher, leading to performance lag spikes. I'll give an example to make the situation...
