Solved Windows 8.1 Chkdsk Scan hanging.

Today I've tried doing a Chkdsk scan on my primary drive. Through the console, I entered this line to start the process on a re-boot 'chkdsk /f /r c:'.

I afterwards left it to do it's work for the next 1 and half hours '6:40-8:10pm', during this time I went to check on the progress of the scan and what I saw was that it was only '10%' into completion, this confused me greatly as previous computers that I have owned would atleast be around 70, or 80% percent completed, so not knowing what to do, I did a cold-boot.

From what I can tell, no visible damage has afflicted said the drive I did the chkdsk scan process on, but I would still very much like to know why my scan is hanging.

Please respond as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance.

Well, I am sorry but it means that your HD is not healthy. With /r , chkdsk will run a long long time and depending on the capacity of the HD, it will go thru every single spot on your HD, marks all the bad sectors and update the Master File Table so Windows will avoid using them. If you search thru the forum, you'll see there are cases it would take more than 24 hours.

1 1/2 hours is nowhere near long enough. You have large drives. Some users here have seen it taking 24 hours or more. Assuming you have some reason for running chkdsk I'd suggest doing it again and letting it finish.

If the check David shows above indicates no errors though there is perhaps no need to do it.

No, when I did that, all it said was 'Windows has found errors on this drive that need to be repaired close this dialogue box and then repair the drive'. This's for both my main drive, and 'game' drive, I tried doing a chkdsk scan on my game drive prior to my OS one and it finished scanning with no issues on the desktop.

It's only my OS drive that seems to 'hang' when I try to do a chkdsk scan through a re-boot.

Is it necessary to even have the /r value? Apparently it shouldn't be used under 'normal' circumstances, and could the notification be a false positive, as I have said, the hard-drive appears to be working properly, this includes before and after the 'scan'. I only just purchased this laptop at most, two months ago.

It does indicate errors, but then again, my game drive which had whatever 'errors' that chkdsk claims it to have shows it to have no bad sectors, or anything that would indicate damage after a scan with chkdsk.

Update: I tried check for errors again on my game drive again, and the same message 'Windows has found errors on this drive that need to be repaired close this dialogue box and then repair the drive'. However, the chkdisk scan claims otherwise, there being no error. Again, could this all just be all false positive?

I'll still carry out the scan with my main drive, although it it strikes me as funny that my game drive takes only 2 hours to scan, while the main drive 24 hours plus.

Can someone verify whether or not this amount disk activity that'll go on for potentially 24hrs+ is safe for the hard-drive in the long-term? I plan to do this only monthly, or is it only after a longer period of time shall I do it?

The problem may be that you are trying to scan your system drive whilst your OS is running , Win 8 does a myriad of things while active , each write/maintainance item it does may cause chkdsk to pause/hang perhaps even restart from an earlier place.

Your best bet is to download hirens boot CD Hiren's BootCD 15.2 - All in one Bootable CD » www.hiren.info and attempt to do a repair using the utilities on there after booting to the CD instead.

In the context of a re-boot? I'd certainly hope not, every attempt at doing his with previous OS's, (even just 8) have finished the chkdsk scan swimmingly, but to have 8.1 be so flawed is both frustrating and disappointing. I'd better not mess with Hiren's BootCD, don't want to create even more trouble for myself as it is.

Thank you for the suggestion though!

Alright, I did the chkdsk scan again. This time it was from 5:09-9:05pm, and it seems to have finished(?) So I went out today for dinner and came back, my laptop was on sleep mode and when I started it back up I was greeted with the log-in screen.

I can only come to two conclusions.

1. The laptop went to sleep mode when I left. However, I don't that's the case, I have my dim setting set to (5) and my sleep setting set to 15, I started at 5:09, and left home at 5:25 without seeing the screen dim, or go into sleep mode, plus, this particular chkdsk was done via through the boot-screen, rather than through the desktop like my 'game' drive.

2. The scan was a success!

However, I missed the chkdsk log and was wondering if there was anyway to view results through my desktop.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to view my chkdsk log and/or offer any insight as to whether or not my scan has completed, feel free to give your response.

Thank you in advance.

No sleep app here, so I suppose I can rule that out. I'll try checking my event viewer later. Hopefully everything is sorted out. I'll try looking up how the last utility is used, i'm always cautious when trying new things on my computer.

Thank you for the response!
