Solved WinKey+X Shutdown options not operating correctly?

System will not sleep with open App

I have a new ASUS ET2702IGTH with 8 to 8.1.1. [DEL]I have noticed some strange behavior when using the Winkey+X menu to shutdown or sleep the unit. If I use the power button on the Start Page, it operates correctly.
[/DEL]

Edit: After testing I have realized however the system is requested to enter sleep results in a Shutdown, after about 2 or 3 minutes, when an APP such as Bing Weather is open. This means open with an icon on the Taskbar . If it is only partially open, with the Task Manger showing the app, the system will not shutdown or sleep.

[DEL]But using the Winkey menu, a Shutdown results in a shutdown, but takes several minutes. If I select Sleep, the unit shuts down. Since it appears there must be some difference in the command issued by the different power buttons, does anyone know how to compare the two options to see what might be going on?
[/DEL]
I do not know if this situation might introduce some type of problem on a system, but since the behavior is different, the system might be left in an unusual condition.

I have not tried the options from the Charms bar. McAfee is currently on this system since it was part of the bloatware. Possibly its behavior is different for the two shutdown options.

Just thought you folks may be getting bored ...

I may be making some progress. I have found if I have this one App running and leave the system to go to sleep, it shuts down. If this App is not running, the system goes to sleep normally.

I do not yet know if it is only this one App or others but I will be testing that possibility going forward. When I find out for sure, I will name the suspect App or Apps.

I'm not bored. Never get bored with Winkey + X. (or Winkey + E / Winkey + D)
No idea how your PC office is arranged, (some don't have easy access)
but I find setting the physical power button to sleep the PC works better than software sleepers.

What you say may be true but the system is designed to go to sleep when left unattended. This behavior brings up a situation where it does not work as designed.

I just left the same system with the App only partially shutdown, still showing in Task Manager, and the system never went beyond turning off the video, so it never went to sleep or shutdown.

I will continue testing to gather more information. This may just be one misbehaving App.

Thanks for the reply

Edit: It turns out the behavior is repeatable even with Bing Weather, so possibly any open App will exhibit the problem. I have another Windows 8 to 8.1.1 system, home built, that does not seem to exhibit the same behavior, but even it will randomly show sleep or shutdown delays.

Since this seems to be related to this particular system, I will call ASUS. I suspect they will tell me they do not support the unit once updated to 8.1. I am running the latest Bios. I might wonder is the Touchscreen is involved.

More research now shows the system will enter the sleep mode and awake the first time fine. The second time the sleep mode is requested, the system Blue Screens and shuts down.

I have now Reset the ASUS system back to Windows 8.0 and the same situation occurs out of the box. So far I have been unable to find the culprit and will probably be returning the system. The Reset back to Windows 8.0 worked fine, by the way.

The dump file gives a 9f bug code and states the analysis is inconclusive, so no device or driver is named. I will attach the dump files if anyone wants to check.

If the system wasn't under warranty, I would try replacing the hard drive and installing 8.1 to see if something might be wrong with the Original ASUS image used to set up the system.

Anyway, tomorrow it will be in the hands of the warranty folks. I did collect data on the ASUS configuration and Recovery systems, if anyone has something they would like to know.

Best Wishes with Warranty Service.
When roaming thru Best Buy, it was interesting to look at and get the feel of an all in one.
Some devices are awesome and have very cool designs for monitor angles for using touch.
The other thread that is currently at 149 pages must have some points.

I was tempted a few times with such awesome good looks but quit in favor of a piece by piece build.
Good Luck!

After a week of trying to track down the problem, and seeing the exact same situation occurred with a clean 8.1 install, I gave up. The system is now in the Warranty system.... Oh well, so much for having a new computer.... :(

Thanks for the replies.
