Hello,

I have tried to start up my PC recently and I get the message
20140526_015104.jpg
that my boot system has failed due to the fact it's missing the file "\BCD".
I have contacted the microsoft company to report this issue no one can help me without my product code, or a disc/USB with the windows 8 system on it.
I have none of these and yet my issue still remains. My PC has worked perfectly the day before I shut it down.
I'm trying very hard to restore my system but all I can find of the ways to restore it is by clicking control panel, etc...

I cannot access my laptop's desktop all I get is this error message and options to enter the setup utilities, firmware and boot options.

In all I'm asking for is, is there a way to restore my system from any of these options or is this another toss away laptop because windows 8 has failed to find this missing file?
I cannot get a replacement because I do not have the key with me that was used to install the operating system. This is all very frustrating and not to mention my job relies on this computer so it's putting everything to risk with my situation right now.

Thank you very much for your support with this matter I look forward to your options.

You may borrow a Windows 8 disk from a friend and boot from this disk
Select the correct time and Keyboard type.
Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.
Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.
Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.
Click on command Prompt.
Type these following commands and hit enter after each line of command:
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /scanos
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

That is another issue, no one that I know has a windows 8 disc. So basically, I can not restore my laptop manually I need a disc or USB to trouble shoot this. Ergo, I'm screwed and this laptop is junk now because of one file...?

Do you have a recovery partition on your computer to restore to original factory state?

That is what I'm asking, like I said before all I can access at this point is Utilities Setup, Firmware Settings, and the Booting Management.
I have no disc, no USB with the OS on it. I never even had a key when I got my laptop from Wal-Mart I looked through everything and all I have is the instructions manual.

I contacted the Microsoft company and they need that key in order to help me which I can not access through the computer itself. They constantly keep telling me to do things from the desktop, I can not access this portion of the PC.

Just the blue screen in the picture above after start up when the Dell logo appears.
I want to recover my laptop to manufacturer setup but I can not seem to access this and basically no one else can without the disc and USB. I was HOPING I can see to it there's a way to recover the laptop from the only access points I have.

I have found this ^ I been messing with this I set it up to "(Yes)" for "Restore Factory Default". Then Exit saving changes then I eventually get the same blue screen after the computer reboot.
Is there anything I can do here?

Yes to "Restore Factory Default" only resets your UEFI to factory settings.

To access the Recovery Partition on a Dell, if you indeed have one or if it also is also not corrupted:
Press the Power button to start the PC At the Dell logo, hold the Ctrl key and press the F11 key simultaneously. The Dell PC Restore screen will come up. Select Restore or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter. if you wish to continue, click Confirm, or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter.
When the utility is finished, click Finish, or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter.

Another method to access the recovery partition on some Dells if it is not booting is to restart the computer 4 times.

Note: Your OEM key is stored in the BIOS/motherboard and since your computer is not booting, you cannot access it.

If no success and you can't borrow a disk, you may have no choice but to purchase another disk.

No no success with this. I'll keep screwing around with it I'll eventually find something. Well thank you for all your help I suppose.

I'd like to ask one thing tho, what is the directory link to the recovery system's file location?

Hi ..I can see that you reset the bios to defaults ....first you need to check the bios ...and set it back up... I suspect the harddrive was either setup as ahci or raid ...normally raid ..so check that option ....set first boot device ...windows boot manager ...oh yes make sure its in uefi mode. Its hard to help when I don't have a dell laptop or overview of the bios. Do you have acces to another pc or laptop ? do you have any blank discs so you can download windows and burn it to disc ?. If its proper dell setup untouched ...there will be a recovery partition ...but first you have to set the bios back up to how the OS was installed ...its def uefi ..so go through the bios and make sure nothing is set to legacy. Theres a lot of ppl on here a lot more savvy than me ....im sure someone will help a lady in distress.

Umm, yeah I have another laptop at hand a friend of mine let me use it till I get my windows 8 back up. I'll recheck all the bios and switch them all over. I didn't mess with anything before windows 8 ended up missing files to it's booting system so I don't see how it's going to work.

As for getting to a disc to download the windows 8 to it might be a little hard. I'll try that too though seeing how I have no other options.

I would like the directory link to the recovery.exe for windows 8 though I wanna try something else too.

Not sure what your referring to, there is no recovery.exe as far as im aware of ...if there is anything it will be in system32 ....if you mean the recovery partition then you need to be able to search and list volumes and partitions as it doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it by default ....if I was actually there I could sort it out no probs ...for downloading windows 8 or 8.1 go here My Digital Life Forums , ask for help there too.

Well like, C:\"Folder"\"Specific folder"\"Program".exe < That kind of directory to an application.
But like all the pictures and whatnot you see before hand is all you're gonna have access to anyways. I'm currently using a windows 7 right now.

Do you have a usb stick ? ....I can create a link to the recovery files .... format the usb stick to fat32 ...make sure its at least 1GB, copy the files straight to the usb stick ....don't put them in a folder ....then try and boot your laptop to recovery ...not saying it will work though ...you might need the usb formatted to be bootable ...had a look at mind cant tell. Let me know if you have a usb and ill link the files so you can download them.

Also note that my pc is 64bit ....most laptops are 32bit ....have no idea if the files are different but heres the link https://www.dropbox.com/s/j0904gn83cp5hd2/RECOVERY.zip ....extract the files ...and add the files in folder to the usb ...don't add the folder ...the files need to be on the root of the usb ....not in any folder

Have you considered buying recovery disks from the manufacturer ?

What is the specific make & model of computer that you have ?

I got recovery disks from Gateway for about $20 US.

They were well worth the money. :)

I'm not gonna buy crap... I only had this laptop for 2 months and the only thing I downloaded was IMVU and Steam. Then it started acting dumb after 2 weeks. I had a windows 7 laptop for 9 years and it died from the motherboard. I refuse to pay for something I didn't do.
I might get a friend to give me a disc for windows 8 which I'll try that see what happens. But the option to buy anything I'm not gonna do because I just got this laptop and it all of a sudden starts lagging and acting up.

So I'm going to try and contact the manufacturer for more details and try to get a windows 8 disc. I don't have the money to even send it if they make me pay for that.
This is the same thing that happened to my first laptop, a week after I got it, it erased all the booting system files. So this isn't the first time this happened luckily I was able to recover it from the system settings startup.

My windows 8 doesn't have that option which pisses me off.

The same thing happened to my mom a week after setting up a brandnew pc with with windows 8 on it ....manufacturer didn't send any disks as they made a recovery partition with an image of windows 8 ...but ....you couldn't boot the damn thing to get to recovery. Had to send it in for repair in the end.

This is probably what I'm going to have to do. Is basically get a replacement. Same thing happened to me, I never got any keys for windows 8 and no discs for the recovery portion of the system. I also can not recover it because it wont boot through.
I called windows about this problem before posting for help on the forums and they wanted the "key" that was suppose to be used when I started up the system. I never got that key and I can't log into my system to see what it is.
So I'm HOPING to God I don't need the key to send the laptop in to get it fixed.

Since you did manage to send it in tho I might have a chance with that so that helped out.
