    Chrome slowing down W8.1 laptop

Recently my laptop (on Windows 8.1) has been slowing right down after I've been using it for a while. Especially if I close it and then reopen it later without restarting. It seems to be linked to Chrome with it getting really sluggish and it improves if I close and reopen Chrome, and of course if I reboot. Any suggests on how to fix this please? Many thanks.

Browsers tend to use a lot of memory to speed up reopening of tabs etc. So it's probably lack of free memory that slows everything down. How much physical RAM do you have ?

Open task manager and at the bottom click on more details.
you should find what is eating up the memory there.

I've got 4GB of RAM. Thanks. It's usually Chrome in task manager.

    Hi there.

Chrome did have a memory leak problem at one time -- maybe fixed - maybe not -- I don't particularly like chrome except on a mobile phone so I can't say -- however I'd suggest closing laptop down completely after using browsers for a while and restarting.

Even with a standard HDD rather than an SSD rebooting Windows 8.1 only takes a few seconds anyway.

    Cheers

Memory leak would be if memory stayed clogged up after Chrome is closed. Like this, it's just the way browsers work and accelerate reopening and refreshing tabs, some take more, some less. FF, with 10 tabs can take 1 GB easy. It depends how "heavy" tabs are.
Don't know how Chrome handles it but in FF you can limit amount of memory cache. Only drawback is that online videos like from Youtube buffer more often and with slower internet it cold be bothersome. Just for that reason I upped memory cache to 1 GB. If that memory segment is needed for something else it will just get swapped to disk.

I found Chrome eating almost 300 MB with only 2 open tabs.
IE with the same tabs is using 198 MB, but it doesnt mean alot.

Unless it's making troubles, like some program reporting "Low memory" condition, it's good to have a lot of stuff residing in memory, it is much faster than having to reload stuff from disk, even if it's an SSD. Empty memory is wasted memory. One of the reasons Win 8 is faster is it's memory management, keeping as much of system stuff in memory instead of reading all of it from disks.
So folks, don't get too much excited about free memory, it's there to be used, not to freeload empty.

Weird, 2GB ram here and it's not slowing down.@OP How many tabs do you have opened at the same time?

I can have 20 plus open. I've added the Great Suspender extension and that seems to have done the trick. It suspends tabs you're not using and reopens them when you click on them. Thanks for all your comments!
