As the title says, new comp with 8.0 installed, upgraded to 8.1, but no os disk. Bought 32gb usb to backup, but file history system image says I need 48. I have a 64gb usb, but file history won't backup to it. something about it not being a legitimate disk. Am I going about this all wrong or what? Do I really need to burn a stack of dvd's to properly protect this thing?

Buy an external USB hard drive then use Macrium Reflect (free or paid) or Acronis True Image (not free) to do an image backup to it. Repeat as you make significant changes to the system.

Most computers come with the ability to create a set of Recovery Discs. Check yours and see. If so that's a good thing to do also.
