What is your primary objective, backing up personal files or the OS?

What utility/program are you using to create the system image? Windows 8 built-in utility (File History page) or third party program like Macrium, Acronis or other?

The windows built-in utility has limited functionality while third party programs offer many more options.

Considering you want to backup 146 GB +/- of data you might want to use a external USB HDD because 146 GB is going to use a lot of DVD's. Since you have a lot of personal files over and above the OS you might also want to consider creating a separate partition for your personal files which you could back-up separately.

To the best of my knowledge you cannot omit data at the individual file level using the windows 8 built-in system imaging utility. You can include/exclude certain partitions but I think that's about it. Like I said, the built-in utility is short on optional features that's why the suggestion to place your personal files in a separate partition which can then be omitted from the imaging process. Your actual OS is only a small part of your 146 GB. Also I suggest you consider using a large USB flash drive for your storage, it will require a lot of capacity but they are available and much more reliable in my opinion.

There are several very good third party imaging programs that have free versions ( Macrium being one of them) that you could consider as well.
